Most of us eat meat, although some eat much more than others. Almost all of this meat is the flesh of domesticated livestock - animals born and raised on farms to be killed and sold for their meat. Should I become a vegetarian? Is it wrong to eat meat?

I have been vegetarian since the last big foot and mouth outbreak in UK (2001) and have not found it difficult. As well as reducing the necessity for so much cruel factory farming, it is environmentally friendly as farm animals add a lot to greenhouse gases in the atmosphere because of their flatulence, it will help with prblems of world food supply in the future and on a more personal level, could lead to longevity in the developed world: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/6710896/Vegetarian-low-protein-diet-could-be-key-to-long-life.html As Ghandi said "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated."

Our teeth and metabolism show that we are omnivors (meat and veg eaters) I ike meat - so does my carnivor (meat eater) dog. What I ask is, what will happen to all the cows, sheep, pigs and goats, chickens and Turkeys etc etc if the world turned veggie? And the meat eater animals we are supposed to adore - our dogs and cats, are we happy to see them die off as well? ? I say NO, never will turn vegetarian! And if you "turn" for ethical reasons, how the hell do you sanctify the mass murder and possible extiction of all of the above animals ? We will be competing for "grazing" areas???

Ok guys, here we go: Really depends on each one's body, but I would say that the majority of the population can't survive easily being strictly vegetarian. I was vegetarian for 6 months and I finished dreaming with hamburgers. Although I was having a balanced diet, it was so hard to me to get up in the morning, I felt tired and old (and I wasn't old at all). So, I think it's good to eat less meat, but it's better (in general) not to go to the extreme. You can try for a couple of months and see how your body reacts. Fot "BoTanica": they made a research about that and they got the conclusion that, with the vegetarian food that is used to feed all the farm animals only in the USA, would be possible to stop the starvation in the world. "I like the animals, this is why I eat them" my wife

Albert 5 : Thank you - we are sort of on the same lines - BUT, what happens to all the animals? do we let them loose? where do they eat, where do they go? Cows give milk because they give they give birth - same as women, so, on the veggie diet we don't drink milk? Is there enough land for them and us, if we are all on the same diet ?And do we kill every carnivor on the planet? No more Tigers, Lions, etc etc? I am NOT putting my carnivor dog on a veggie diet for love nor money - nor wil I condone that we put to sleep all our canine/feline friends either!!! I have read - online that there is NOT enough land to feed the planet on a veggie only diet............

Well, probably we must just to find a balance: not to be vegetarian, neither eat meat every day.

Have I missed something? The question was could you be a Vegetarian, not the whole planet..so Im not sure why you are waffling on about culling the worlds entire population of livestock?. Being a vegetarian is a personal choice, I became a Vegetarian 10 years ago for 'ethical reasons' as Botanica put it. My husband is a meat eater and so are all of my dogs and cats, I certainly do not try to choke people with my own beliefs. However you can make the choice without having to cull every cow on the planet...Im not sure if I have ever heard such a weak aguement on staying a carnivor, keep telling yourself that you are doing the animals a favour by slaughtering them to satisfy your appetite, heaven forbid that the planet is over run by cows or sheep!

Well said Tinkie - to me being vegetarian in a personal choice (same as religion) and yes, my husband does eat meat. I've been veggie since I was 16 (aaarrrrggghh that's 30 years now!) but don't pontificate on the subject. If I have guests for dinner I will cook whichever I feel like making - meat or veggie. So far I haven't had any friends turn their nose up at eating veggie food which is just as interesting and tasty. So, in answer to your question No1doyen - only you can make your mind up how you really feel about this issue and if you want any help/advice on recipes etc I'm sure there are plenty of us out here who will help without the added lecture.

No 1 Doyen: If you, or any human, were meant to be veggies or vegans, you'd have been born with a mouthful of teeth like a sheep!

Think you may like to know that the oldest discovered human skull was that of a vegetarian, we elvolved into meat eaters, which is still highly undigestable in our sytems, maybe Tenakotou, if we were meant to be meat eaters we would have been born with a mouthful of teeth like a dog!! So no1Doyen you dont need it, but do you want it??
