The Geneva Convention of 1949 lists a number of protections which countries must apply to enemy combatants from the opposing country captured during times of war. Do you think those suspected of or convicted for terrorist offences should receive the same protections as those which apply to prisoners of war?

NO! The object of terrorism is to terrorist - nothing else. Terrorists, in the main, do not wear a uniform and so under the terms of the Geneva Convention (leaving aside the fact that we may not be at war with their country of origin) they can/must be treated as spy's and accorded the same laws and penalties as all other spy's who act against whichever country they have operated in. I suppose it then comes down to the governing powers of whichever country has been terrorized - personally, speaking solely for myself and not caring if you like it or not - whatever action the terrorist committed against property, people and country should be visited upon them and the country which has supported them in their training and operations. Terrorists should not be bargained with nor accorded any form of human rights beyond which they accorded those they terrorized. Hard - yes. Cruel - yes. Bargain with them - No. Eradicate them - Yes!

YES. They should be treated as POW's. Like the Japanese treated theirs in the 2nd World War. Make them do a bit of manual work rather than flopping around watching their TV's and talking about their 'Civil Rights' as in the Geneva Convention.

One mans freedom fighter is another mans terrorist. Its a catch 22 every time. Who are the freedom fighters in Afghanistan? the Foreign troops? (invaders????) or the local taliban? I HATE the taliban and every thing they stand for. But why oh why are so many local people beng killed - by BOTH sides? What young person, really wants to die? and who knowns what goes through their minds when they do these awful suicide bombings? There must be something, that they really believe in. And ı don't for one minute believe its the US propaganda of "they want the xxx amount of virgins in paradise" - thats crap propaganda.

What is a terrorist? Hans is about right in msg 8. Israel is a prime case. How many UK troops did they murder in the late 1940's and now the USA and UK government kow tows to them at every opportunity. Who is the villain in Afghanistan? Did anyone ask the USA to drag half the western worlds young men and women in to be murdered? Perhaps if the west said sod Israel, Afghanistan and Iraq and just left the "terrorists" to get on and sort those countries out then fewer people in the UK may be killed. I say UK only because the USA are the instigators of their own down fall and good luck to them.

Addressing all you Brits who are contributing to this topic - How many countries can you name where the British "Empire" had any involvement in years gone by which are now or in the recent past have not experienced some form of what you might term "terrorist" activity - India/Pakistan,Palestine/ Israel, "Northern" Ireland, Afghanistan, , America, Iraq, Cyprus etc...???? Is this a coincidence?

the mujahadeen in afghanistan..were funded by the us/uk to counter the soviet invasion,,there leader osama bin laden,,who is now and all his followers are branded as terrorists.. but at the time according to western media,,were freedom fighters..al-queda means the base..it was a list of mujahadeen fighters who were paid and bought to fight the soviet invasion. be careful what you wish for..what happens when the state brands you as a terrorist? the first casualty is freedom of speech

RE msg 21, glw215: (...) India/Pakistan,Palestine/ Israel, "Northern" Ireland, Afghanistan, , America, Iraq, Cyprus etc...???? Is this a coincidence? (...) => It's not a coincidence, but you only show one side of the coin. In history every country ruling (most of) the (then known) world had to deal with slaves/oppressed locals who wanted their freedom. Portugal, Spain, France, Holland, England are only a few examples from (recent) history. So, the UK is absolutely not to blame in particular - its bad luck is that it all happened in recent times with far better ways of communication than in other cases in different eras.

Aussies don't mince words One thing about blokes from Oz is that their hearts and humour are always in the right place! T B. Bechtel, a City Councillor from Newcastle, Australia, was asked on a local live radio talk show, just what he thought about the allegations of torture of suspected terrorists. His reply prompted his ejection from the studio, but to thunderous applause from the audience. HIS STATEMENT: 'If hooking up one raghead terrorist prisoner's testicles to a car battery to get the truth out of the lying little camelshagger will save just one Australian life, then I have only three things to say,' 'Red is positive, Black is negative, and Make sure his nuts are wet.'

When people start arguing about definitions terrorists can score a big victory. It's not so black and white, nevertheless for those still confused whether to put quotation marks around the word or not here are key criteria: "..deliberate violence or the threat of violence directed at innocent non-combatants and governments to cause fear systematically to attract media attention for causes which may be political or ideological or religious and which are viewed as coercive."
