Sea or fresh water fishing? Fresh water: first fill a reservoir yourself. Sea (from the rocks): buy an aquarium first - the tiny fish you catch have beautiful colours. And you only need a bucket full of them to have a fine one man BBQ.

RE msg 4, andy-f: (...) ( i bet you dont know where latter is ) (...)

=> You might lose the bet, andy-f. Do you mean the Gönendere göleti left on the road to Iskele?

I'll check tomorrow, andy-f - I just closed some programs on my computer and I'm now backing up my hard drives. Btw: Morphu is the old name (used by the medieval Anglo-French occupiers of Cyprus, the Lusignan dynasty and later by the Greek speaking Cypriots) ; the town is now called Güzelyurt ((which means "beautiful area or (father)land")). If you are interested in a map with all the reservoirs I can email you one - as one fisherman to another.

Andy - disregard the old Dashak from the usual interlopers! - there ARE good fish to be had from the beach - particularly Bass and Cow Bream - it just depends on the bait you use. I watched a really nice grey mullet landed at Silver Rocks just yesterday and its not unusual for very good sized (barbecue size) bream to be landed at Celebrity. I haven't seen Dutch fishing at either of these places though. Also try the old peoples home in Lapta - good for Sarpa and Zargana at the right time of year and also sea urchin if you want to dive for them.

Look at fishbase.net, scroll down to "Information by Country / Island" and select "Cyprus" and "Marine" - this will list all the species that can be caught here. However:-

a) the fishing is not good - especially from the shore

b) there is only one serious guy for fishing trips that I know (Barbaros in Girne harbour)

c) Nobody tries for most of the species available

The best fishing is for Bluefin Tuna ( 8kg - 120kg) between May and October, and Amberjack and Barracuda between September and April.

Hi

Where can we buy a copy of the map ? Fed up of driving round and round and ending up at dead ends . Seen a lot of the countryside though and found lots of places that we didnt know existed and met many locals who think we are mad to fish for pleasure and not for food !

Having been out fishing with most of the guys on the harbour the most 'knowledgable' fisherman I know is Ozgur from fishingnorthcyprus.com.

He does more research than anyone I have ever fished with. We almost always hook into fish and normally end up putting fish back as we catch our fill (depending on the season of course). He doesnt just do the same old techniques but adapts international fishing techniques to suit the fishing here.

Having lived (and fished for almost every species) in South Florida for 10 years (where the fishing is fantastic), I agree the fishing here is not the best but if you adapt you can catch here.

I had a serious computer software crash but all seems fine again: I'll send the requested maps (reservoirs) this Sunday afternoon, when I'm back from the historical Kyrenia Walk nr. 6 (this morning).

On a boat trip out of Girne heading west in early October last year, we caught only 1 medium-sized fish which was added to the lunch menu. Never found out what it was (though I suspect it might have been a small tunny). Wonder if any of you fisherfolk can shed some light? It was a fast swimmer and did some 'leaping' to catch the bait, was silver, streamlined, and with a forked yellow tail. Can't find an exact match from the links provided earlier.

Without a photo it is virtually impossible - did you try Fishbase.net?? If so, and you see anything vagely like it, then do a search on Yahoo or similar and get a wider selection of photos of each fish.

Probably a Little Tunny otherwise known as a Bonito. Not the best eating fish (boney and bloody). In Florida they use them as bait but people eat them over here.

Message 3 *****WARNING*****

"the best fish are the balloon and weaver there very tasty mostly caught in mid jan but they only bite if you wear shorts"

The weaver fish has a very painful sting which is occasionally but rarely fatal. It is not the bite - it is the sting on the front dorsal fin that does the damage so you must never handle it (even when dead) if you are not experienced. Mostly people are hurt by standing on it because it hides in the sand.

I don't know a balloon fish but I am worried you mean the puffer (or porcupine) fish which is extremely toxic - quite often fatal as there is no known treatment. It is the liver, reproductive organs and (in some species) the skin that are deadly and the fish should only be prepared by an experienced chef because if you damage these organs then the flesh becomes toxic also. Even though it is considered a great delicacy its sale is banned in many countries. If you mean a different fish then I apologise.
