Anybody had experience of AVAST AV software?

If so, would you recommend it?

The reviews have always been very good for this and it does have one of the highest detection rates but I have heard of people having trouble with some blocking . I ran it for a while but changed to AVG free edition.

Cnet downloads list their downloads ( not each companies) of anti virus as:

1. AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition... 1,802,599 downloads

2. Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Antivirus... 1,018,004 downloads

3. Avast Home Edition - Free Antivirus... 678,848 downloads

4. Avast Professional Edition... 102,079 downloads

5. Norton AntiVirus 2010... 51,555 downloads

You've got to remember that you get what you pay for. All of the free ones do what would be seen as the basic but they all differ in little ways and usually you end up running what you are happy with. It's personal choice.

The only one I would never run again is Norton. It takes over everything and seems to want to be the boss of my computer.

Also....

You can check with your Internet Service Provider online. People like Virgin, BT have these progs downloadable and updateable through them.

Generaly good advice I would agree with and also try spybot search and destroy as a supplement to your AVG

Thanks Tom, I used to run SpyBot. However, it failed to pick up a piece of spyware I know to exist on my laptop!

I have software that picks it up and deletes it whenever it emerges from a couple of hiding-places, but cannot dispose of it permanently.

Used Avast for a while but then changed AVG on a friend's advice. I eally didn't get on with AVG so changed to Avira and have had no problems ever since. The only one I did have major problems with was Norton! My PC was running so slowly I took it in to be fixed and despite having the latest version Norton we had over 20 virus on the computer:-(

Have been using Avast for some long time now and had no problems. Tried AVG but was not happy with it.

I used avast but have recently ended up with 2 virus's that got bast it. They were not malicious so there was no big issue but I decided to change to Cloud Panda on all my families computers and it is working great.
