Please could someone advise me ..... I already have a flat screen HD ready TV with freeview and am looking to update my DVD recorder. I have been looking at a Blu-Ray recorder with built in Freesat and wonder if there will be any benefit in having this in Cyprus. i understand that i will need a dish but does Freesat work there? I am wanting to be able to view the basic BBC/ITV channel 4 and freeview chanels and wonder the best way to achieve this. However I do want to avoid a huge ugly dish if poss.

You will need a 4.2 metre dish to view the likes of BBC1, ITV etc. If you want to find out more, look in the satellite section of the forum or use the search facility at hte top of the page.

We have a 1.8mtr dish and get ITV channels but not any BBC with the exception of BBC News.

I guess what i am wanting to know is whether there is any benefit in buying a Blu-ray DVD with Freesat or am I just as well to buy a standard DVD and then get a dish for my requirements - or if I have a large enough dish will freesat work there?

We have a Blu-ray and to be perfectly honest its not worth the additional cost as the only DVD's you get here are pirate. We bought a couple of real Blue-ray ones when we were last down South but I personally don't think the additional cost of the discs are worth paying out for - but that's just my opinion.

I think to get your freesat to work you will need to 4.2mtr dish but Mark or Iceman could confirm this.

I'm suprised about that Karen. We are recent converts to Blu-Ray and much prefer the picture and sound quality over DVD.

Is your system set up correctly in that you are using a HDMI Cable from the Blu Ray player to the TV and not a SCART or Coaxial Cable, and that your Blu Ray is set to output at 1080p?

For others...A HD Ready, or Full HD TV, connected to a Blu Ray player via any other way than a HDMI Cable is no better than a standard DVD. A Blu Ray connected to a normal TV is no better than a standard DVD player.

The sound quality through a seperate 5.1 Dolby Surround is much better than DVD too.

Like Vinyl to CD, the quality step up isn't that much and is really just a way to get us to part with our cash for films made before 2006. Now with the advent of 3D, Blu Ray will come into its own. I can see Avatar being next Christmas' must buy film on Blu Ray.

Hi Timothy

Yes fully wired up with HDMI cables from every corner (even the bloody speakers have individual HDMI connections!). Maybe it was the film or just our eyesight fading but we couldn't see what all the fuss was about. I agree with the vinyl to cd statement but surely the sound quality is only as good as the system you are using it through.
