Maplins for this one if you are in the UK http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?moduleno=12726 timer plus a boost selection and battery backup in case of power cuts. Apparently easy fitted in place of the on off switch as well. If you are in NC maybe someone can bring one out for you?

Tektan in Kyrenia is where I bought mine, it is a simple device to use but suggest an electrician to wire it up

This is what we have and it just fits where your current switch is - http://www.screwfix.com/prods/67063/Plumbing/Central-Heating-Controls/Horstmann-E15-Boost-Timeswitch?cm_mmc=NexTag-_-Plumbing-_-Central%20Heating%20Controls-_-Horstmann%20E15%20Boost%20Timeswitch&source=aw

I know the maplins ones work as they have been fitted to NC immersions and apparently the electrician was impressed.

Cooper - thanks for the link. Please can you confirm that it easilly fits in place of a normal on/off "light" switch.

Also I see there are 2 models giving power on for either up to 45 mins or up to 2 hours. Which one do you suggest?

thanks John

John,

The link provided by Cooper is the one we have (E15) but the screwfix description is wrong as it says 15, 30 & 45 mins. This is incorrect, as the E15 is 15, 30, & 1 hour. If you click on 'enlarge image' on the the same link you will see for yourself.

The E30 is the one that goes on for up to 2 hours and is not needed as an hour max is sufficient imo.

Hi John, our's was fitted directly in place of the on/off switch we had for our hot water. We have the 15,30 & 45 mins one and find this to be adequate time to heat all the water we require.

Just a word of warning: the on-off switch for immersion heaters normally cuts off the Live and the Neutral at the same time. Some timer switches cuts off only the Live connection in which case if the heating element develops a fault to earth (which is the normal mode of failure), it will trip the RCD (the Residiul Current Device which detects any earth fault) and therefore you will be without electricity until you get an electrician to replace the faulty element or remove the Neutral connection.

If Maplin is a distant dream, Steve Dickinson has these things in his office at Lapta.

I have one of the 2 hour jobs brought in last year from the UK, and it works fine - even if more than one person wants a shower ....

Also possibly useful to control a booster pump for irrigation, garden taps etc - it saves remembering to switch stuff off, given Elko's point about a separate double pole isolating switch.
