All, Just a nice tale to tell - we don't all get ripped off all of the time! Karaman - man and wife leaving for airport at 3am for 5am flight, wife is dropping off husband and will follow on a few days later. Drive 5 metres, find a flat tyre, never had to change one before on this car, and spent 10 mins trying in the dark to no avail. A Cypriot couple drove by, they stopped and asked what was wrong. Cypriot couple drove the man down to Tempo, but in advance had called taxi company to meet them there. Wife realises 20 minutes after her husband has gone that he has the only set of keys to the car. She gets in touch via mobile to the taxi company who then call the driver, who then, once he has dropped hubby off at Ercan, then drives all the way back up to Karmi to give her the keys - and guess what, at NO extra cost! What a lovely bunch of Cypriots!

the kindness and genune love off cyprioys is widespread however the gree and thieving and corruption causes more distress to more people than the GENUINE LOVE AND HOSPITALITY of the MAJORITY of turkish cypriots.

well for you it might be all doom and gloom, but not me! Littlenige - greed and thieving and corruption are words that surely you should recognise given your illegal taxi business. Please can you try and spell as well - we all make little mistakes, but you are truely something else! Stop bloody wingeing!

Hot Hornet, When I read your first post about "illegal" taxi drivers I was going to offer you some support. Considering this is only your second day of posting and you do not have the decency to post any details about yourself, I have got to say you are totally obnoxious. The fact the Nigel's spelling leaves a lot to be desired, especially after a couple of lemonades is not of your concern. Everyone across North Cyprus and the UK that read's these all the BB's knows Nigel and usually take the rise out of him for it. Over the last 4 years I have been one of the first to dig in and have a go at people when it is deserved and many here will enjoy a good discussion with the gloves off at times. But the methodolgy you have chosen, deliberatley I would assume, will get you ignored when the novelty wears off and even better the management will just withdraw your membership. Either chill out or go away. Your choice.

well cyprusishome I am totally hurt by your comments - i thought that the fact that I could spell would be appreciated! Littlenige must be drunk most of the time then from that I can see - not good for a taxi driver. I have never come across him, despite you saying that most people do - I must have integrated myself in with the local community more than you guys. I can see your points, but what has the fact that I haven't put my details got to do with anything - I am not hiding anything if thats what you mean. I have lived here for 6 years, and over that time have seen NC turn into a haven of haters - most of which are Brits - when before it was a truely lovely place to be. People like Nigel will say its because everyone is being shafted, but to be honest I have seen as many 'shirley valentine' moments than I care to remember - people get so carried away with their 'have to have' attitude. But, before you shout, I have seen some lovely English people move here, spending their very hard earned money to provide something for the future for their kids - and these are the MOST astute, careful and well researched people, ensuring that they have not made the mistakes that so often happen. Yes my second day of posting, after all this time in Cyprus I have only just now come across some of the most negative and twisted peeps in my whole time here - mostly British. No one has ever accused me of being obnoxious before either, and I guess thats because you have never met me. I love this place to bits, and there are lots that upset me here, its not all perfect, but its a darn site better than the UK - it just seems as though some people should go back there for all their moaning about here. Sorry to offend people, but the truth doesn't do many people favours does it?

Well, Hot Hornet. I have noted spelling mistake Well, Hot Hornet, I can't resist saying, that you have also made the same spelling mistake - twice in your postings! There are many on this website & others whose spelling is awful, but I say nothing (even though as an English teacher it is tempting sometimes!)

Enough already! Aren't we getting sidetracked here? The bottom line is that someone wanted to relate a positive TRNC experience to us. We quite rightly spend lots of time sympathising with and trying to help folks who have had difficulties, but surely we should also be encouraging folks who want to fly the flag for this lovely place. If a thread is a positive one, then let's keep it positive...if it's one where opinion is asked for, fair enough, give it...and where the thread is negative we should seek to answer appropriately and constructively. Personally, I love to hear this kind of thing. In an uncertain and dark world, it is comforting to know that goodness and kindness still exist.

Kitty, I agree with your point about positive things but unfortunatley this person has just joined in last 24 hours and on 2 threads has already 100% alienated hersel from the whole community by choosing to attack individuals. If you have not seen the thread on taxis then take a look. This is not someone who has come on here to make positive statements but has come on to make personal attacks. Obviosuly I have no idea how long you have been posting on these BB's but I have done so for 4 years and think I speak from a source of experience. If she were genuine then I would be the first up there in support but unfortunatley she is not.

Thank you for your response. I have been on Cyprus 44 longer than you have actually so I think I speak from experience as well. If you check me out, you will see that I have posted many times, but I am also very guarded about where I get involved and usually only chose to if I can be constructive, helpful or just raise a smile (or indeed if I need some help myself). As for individual forum members, I am much more interested in "what" people say - to use a corporate buzz phrase, it's about adding value at the end of the day. Yes, I have seen the taxi thread, and I am disappointed that an opportunity for constructive and helpful comment (on both sides of the agrument regarding legality/insurance etc) got lost in the murky waters of mudslinging. You're right, it shouldn't have gone that way. So I think my own comment here about maintenance of and responses to threads is a fair and relevant one. We can all sometimes be unwise in our choice of words or the platform from which we chose to express those words. I am not defending the person in question here as my point is equally well demonstrated on the taxi thread and I do not think it is right that people use these forums to cause quarrels and make personal attacks. Hopefully, if this person is genuinely seeking to make a valuable contribution to this board, they will soon learn how best to make that contribution. Anyway, all that aside, why I chose to interject when this thread started to go downhill was because I really want to get across that so often we are very good at making life a lot less pleasant for ourselves than it should be. To use a very old analagy our half-full glasses become very quickly half-empty! I rest my case.

Hi all, Just to get back to the original topic, when were in NC last Oct/Nov we decided to take a drive over the mountains to Guzulyurt. Never realizing how nerve racking and perilous the journey would be! By the time we got to Guzelyurt darkness had very suddenly descended and the thoughts of returning by the same route was very daunting to say the least. We drove into the town and decided to have something to eat and try to figure out a different route back. However we could not seem to find a restaurant that served dinner so we asked in a photographer's shop if he could give us directions to a nice restaurant. The owner of the shop very kindly asked his assistant to accompany us to a restaurant where we had a lovely chicken dinner. When walking back to the car I went into a chemist shop to ask directions back to Kyrenia. The owner of the shop there, then went out of his way to walk with us to the end of the road and gave us very clear directions back to Nicosia and then to Kyrenia. But of course we took a wrong road, and ended up in a petrol station somewhere outside Guzelyurt and had to ask directions again. Once again the owner of the garage was brought out to talk to us. he told us he lived in a villa in Lapta and he travelled to and from London every month in a van, and if we ever wanted to travel with him we could, even though we live in Ireland, and he would even bring over furniture for us if we wanted. He gave us his address and phone numbers in London and Lapta if we ever needed help with anything. Hows that for Cypriot hospitality! Theresa

Kitty, One point of issue. What I said was I have been around all the BB's here for 4 years, might be newish on this one but have seen some garbage thrown around them that would turn you off life at times. This is the worst example of a new poster I have seen. OK. I love living here and would not change it for anything. I would not know where to start in singing the praises of my neighbours, the local shops and servises etc. I would say that most people who come on these BB's whinging and moaning are only reaping what they sow.

Hi Larry f We had a similar experience when we were lost, we stopped at a petrol station to ask directions and not only did he virtually walk to the end of the road to make sure we went the right way, but he gave us a couple of bottles of water for free as he thought we looked a bit hot and flustered! Needless to say, the next day we went back with a bottle of raki for him! Chris

i must say that, when i started first to post in this forum, about electricity or water informations i noticed that people were sharing experience and idea and i did like it - after some post came about going to the south to ikea or shopping and i was surprise to read that people were offering the trip for an amount of money not for the fact of meeting and exchanging ideas !! it surprised me because i experient other forums and sharing ideas and good plans were free of charge - i do agree with hot hornet when she says we must make locals to work unless foreigners are themselves self-employed - it is the same in any country not black illegal work authorised even if there are lots of people doing it - what surprised me is that they offer their services in posts !!!! so no surprised if one taxi get caught on the border !!!

We've just got back from Cyprus . We were buying furniture from a store called Isko outside Kyrenia on the road to Esentepe , we dealt with a young lady who was really nice and nothing was to much trouble , we ended up purchasing a three piece suite which we thought was a reasonably priced . It was two days later we got a phone call asking us to go back to the store because they had made a mistake with the price , myself being negative thought they were going to add more on, instead she was really apologetic and knocked of £400 , how's that for honesty if that was Britain it would go in someone's back pocket . I'D CERTAINTLY RECOMMEND THIS STORE

Kitty 1 and Cyprusishome Kitty thanks for your comments, and yes I would agree that some of my comments were a little below the belt at times, but I can't hold back sometimes, especially when Littlenige was arrogant enough to post a bloody great advert with his services on after I had had a dig at him - I was accused of being obnoxious by you Cyprusishome, but I would dispute that somewhat! I don't really care what people might say about me, and it is typical that someone would come up with 'you have only just joined to forum', but just because I have not been signed up for all this time does not mean that I haven't been watching what people have been saying, nor does it mean that I am any less qualified than you to comment - maybe i have lived on this island longer than you perhaps for example? I do get wound up by people like Littlenige as he has responded with very little skill and has not even given a good case as to why he is a taxi driver, when he is supposedly retired, and doesn't even admit that what he is doing is illegal. So sorry, but if you look around, you will see that I am posting positive comments elsewhere, on bird watching, residency issues, social events etc etc - so I am not just here to be nasty to people - but DO get hot under the collar when issues of 'advertising' and 'touting' appear on this site - thats not whats its about, and people should be giving others legally bonifide, Turkish Cypriot companies and workers who are good at what they do - I would much prefer to live with the society rather than making this island another little Britain, much like Spain and the like - yuk!
