Surely progress is never made with backward steps. To close the border now gives victory to the scaremongers in the south, giving tghem an even greater victory over the north.

I agree with Lemtich - could create problems for some with flights, and what about all those who just LOVE IKEA, and should we deny the Greek Cypriots the chance to come and lose lots of lovely money inour casinos.

Toshut the borders creates a large enclave, and that negates the freedom of the last few years.

Can't close the borders, how else will the Greek JCB's be able to access and bulldoze the Oram's property?!

Mr Pike has started up his own demolition Company. He has offered to bulldoze all properties that "The Carpet baggers" have built, free of charge.

The crossing points will not be closed to many TC's work on the other side, to many TC like thier Orphn Annie's pork, to many GC's come across for the casino;s and girl

Crossing points don't have to close completely for the effects to be felt.

If the customs "concession" for Northies coming back into TRNC was reduced to zero, there would be no reason to go over other than for flights via Larnaca (which I wouldn't generally encourage now) and TCs travelling to/from work, and shopping there would effectively stop. If the TRNC gov dropped VAT on food, etc., with the shortfall in revenue being balanced by increased corporation tax, the costs here would probably be similar to that in the South anyway,

If GC's want to travel North to play in the casinos they should be allowed to, however most visiting GCs don't spend a red cent here out of principle (cussedness).

TRNCV - why do they come then? I thought they came to lose/win money because they couldnt gamble in the south. For the rest of your post I agree - make shopping here slightly cheaper - and at my last visit south I thought the prices were about the same (didnt go to shop per se) or even more for some things - so why go. If Ikea is so important maybe all the people who need their Ikea fix should bombard the firm with pleas to open one here!!

That's one of the only times they come here and spend money.

Other than that, they come to look at "their" property and bring a packed lunch to avoid any spending here.

Alternatively, the TRNC gov could make things so cheap here, the GCs would come over and do all their shopping, spending loads of Euros here.

The money GC do spend in casinos does not even come into our economy, it goes to Turkey, Russia, Israel etc cos that is who owns them.

My view, stop and search every GC registered car to check for documentation regarding houses here. Just like the GC have done to people going south to Larnaca etc with contracts or estate agent stuff. Question them for long hours and then send them packing!!

When is a closed border not a closed border?

It is customs/immigrations duty to take as long as is needed to satisfy themself about anyone entering the TRNC. Special areas could be set aside for this purpose so as not to impede the flow of traffic while this takes place.

Ha-ha! That's a more realistic view; though most wouldn't admit to that.
