Topten, yes laptop hard drives can be replaced...usually in a compartment underneath.

TopTen,

There is no problem with changing a laptop hard drive. You can do it yourself quite simply. Turn the beast on its front and look at the bottom. You should see lots of little "Lock Closed" and "Lock Open" symbols dotted around. One set of these will refer to your hard drive compartment and there will probably be a set of screws that also hold in the drive. Remember when you take your old drive out of the laptop you will also have to take the hard drive out of its caddy! Very important that you do not throw away the caddy.

Best bet for you, unless you are very happy doing it without instructions, is to google something like "how to change the hard drive in a Dell Inspiron 6900"

Just put in the make and model of your own laptop then search around - there is always detailed instructions out there, its just finding them that's tricky! Good luck, its not brain surgery, go for it.

How is he gonna read google? He has the laptop upside down, he's got the hard drive in one hand and the caddy in the other....

What nobody has mentioned is that if at all possible try to do a backup of your hard drive before you change it out otherwise you will be starting from scratch again.

There are illustrated manuals for almost all DIY computer repairs on the Net. Print the right one for you before you start DIY! There's also software that keeps checking your (SMART) hard drive - and gives you a warning on screen - for signs of failure. And last but not least: for around 80 Pounds you can buy a portable hard drive (Lacie & Omega are good, reliable brands) to make a regular back up. For the average user once a week would suffice (I back up daily, when working on a map. Losing a week's work would really make me angry!). Alas, most people tend to forget to back up. And here the back up software comes to the rescue: you can tell the software to refuse to shut down your computer - unless you made the back up.

If you go to Com-Aks in Girne they will do the job for you at a reasonable price - they will quote beforehand. They will back-up everything and restore the system as before. They did this for me (on a desktop) 2 years ago and I paid US$80 including the new drive.
