Hi. We are coming to TRNC for a week and have never used our open fire before, is there a certain procedure for the first time you use it. Many thanks Max

Suggest you get someone nearby who knows what they are doing to help you and show you how to get the best from your fire... first point of order is safety... second safety, third... you get the idea! you can get a good idea of the draw (the speed of air drawn up your chimney) by lighting something like an incense stick...

Check the flue is clear top to bottom, you can do this with a mirror to look up, do a smoke test as Groucho says, with an incense stick or a candle with an oversize wick to creat more smoke. Use only dry seasoned wood, start with kindling and work up to logs, and last thing at night put it out or make sure you can stop any sparks or bits of wood from ejecting out onto the floor. Not a bad idea either to fit a smoke alarm in your property, and clean the chimney once a year. Just because you are in Sunny Cyprus dont forget all the lessons you have learnt on safety back home.
