No Ismet, just bad manners. Unless the word(s) is/are so badly written, that it is not understood, or a bit vague in meaning, then all that is required is to ask for clarification.

I think the problem is that so many English people cannot spell properly and it was never high on the list of priorities at school to learn. For me personally it drives me mad as spelling a word incorrectly can give a totally different meaning in a sentence however I wouldn't correct someone in an argument.

" Is it a British trend to pick on the wrong spellings of others when they run short of arguments? We never do that in Turkish but again we hardly have a spelling problem because it is spelled as it sounds, unlike English which is an almost a random association of letters ismet " the kindness of cypriots, I rest my case. Awww ismet thankyou

Ismet, I believe spelling is a problem for some people because, as you may know some words that sound the same are spelt totally different, the vagaries and beauty of the English language. As well as statement above about spelling no longer being an issue in schools, yes education is not a priority in UK, so many rely on spell checkers now that it is forgotten about manual checking. I am as gilty as most wit that one!!!!!!! Many years ago we had a wonderful English Teacher who would deduct serious marks in essays etc and we had to learn how to define phrases, clauses, verbs, adverbs etc. Ask a child today what a clause is and they would probably say a member of Santas family. Personally think it is abhorent to challenge some bodies spelling in public as that person may be dyslexic or have vision problems. When it is somebody I know well, and there are many across all the BB's here I will jokingly pick up on an error and vice versa. that is part of the enjoyment of the boards, the camaradiry (bu**er cannot remember how to spell it). That's my two pennorth!!!!!!

why would anyone want to pick on people for spelling mistakes it is bad manners. i am not very good at spelling, and make the mistake of typing too fast and not reading over it. plus you get used to texting on a mobile and forget to write properly in other situations. as you get older the old brain matter deteriates. that's my excuse and am sticking to it. my son is dyslexic so i understand how this would really offend some people. so stop it and take it in your stride . my son was called thick at school and has an i.q higher than the IDIOTS that called him thick.

Think that everyone makes spelling mistakes at some point or other, no matter how good their command of English is. I find myself looking up the dictionary to check the spelling of words that should be simple enough. It's an age thing. Again mistakes easily made when someone is not familiar with using a keyboard, dyslexia, sight problems, and then just some people have never been that hot at spelling. What's the problem? As long as you can understand what is being said, it's churlish and ignorant to point it out. I do hate to see text style messages on forums though. Again it's my age, and it takes me forever to work out what they mean. Cruggs, your post reminded me of reading books by Ronald Searle whilst I was a kid, they were excellent. http://www.kinglybooks.com/searle11.htm

I love English, usually it doesn't matter how much you jumble the words of a sentence up or how you put punctuation in, it still means the same thing. There are, however, some exceptions. "The condemned man spoke half an hour after he was hanged!" Lem

It should be: - The condemned man spoke. Half an hour after, he was hanged. Weird eh? Lem

Hi cruggs, I take your point on Zubes ties. He told me he was wearing them for a bet! He's getting married this month I hear. That will take the smile off his face! You are welcome (as are any board members) for an evening of frivolity sometime during w/c.24/9/08. at The Ship . John sounds an OK guy, but I am worried about Chris. She is determined to fight someone at dawn! Then theres wackyjim and Jock! ( fight anyone when they've had a few) ( Put the heed on yous!) I only hope Zube is up to this! He might be worn out, after three months of marriage! Beautiful day! Have a good one! wyn

Good thread..decent discussion with some interesting points (and some funny ones too). I think it's the content that's important. This isn't an exam or a professional presentation, it's a forum for us to make friends, help out and yes sometimes give warning. If the spelling's not quite right then there's no need to make people feel stupid or embarrassed. We should encourage people for making a contribution. Have a nice day all.
