a very fair report paul and I will certainly listen as well... I'd agree pressure is mounting for a deal, but it will be nothing like enough to move the sides any and it is not clear whether "a considerable time" before negociation happens again is in itself a truly realistic proposition: several commentators have pointed out that every time since 1974 a deal was even talked about, the gc side are offered less and less in return for their signature If I sympathised with the official gc position, I'd only hear the chill beat of the metronome ticking ever more loudly as the years steadily slip away

Does the UN General Secretary usually attend any of these meetings ? Sounds like somebody is getting a bit worried. I wonder how much pressure Mr K-moon can put on these two guys .

arry, not very much surely! ...and even if he could, what possible "solution" could he ever really impose on the two sides? make cyprus a sort of un colony? hardly! as the un warned last year they have many more urgent responsibilities (than unfreezing cyprus) ie to save people in war or from dying of hunger and thirst the un tried to help cyprus by knocking heads together in 1959 and 2004 and where did that get us? the un could only apply extreme pressure via military action, facing turkish forces of 600.000 ...so understandably there is very little apetite for that among the membership, perhaps only south cypriots accepting that body bags would inevitibility ship home, even in the event of a "victory" (whatever "victory" means, as price charles would say) paul, unbiased report on world at one, except the old mantra repeated again of "no cyprus deal, no turkey joining the eu" ...but there is evidence that france and germany want to block turkey regardless
