We had a great holiday at the mercure hotel.

Everything was perfect except for my massage.

I decided to treat myself. 50 minutes aromatherapy massage. The massage was over in 40 minutes and I have to say it was the worst massage I had ever received in my life. I spoke to the manager of the hotel (or someone who claimed they were) and I got a call from the spa offering me another one which I refused. Then paid the 120 tl as we checked out today.

Please do not waste your money on a massage there. Im very sure the lady who massaged me had no idea what she was doing. A total waste of money and a real disappoinment for me.

What a shame. At least you have brought it to the manager's attention so hopefully something will be done for future customers.

I am a qualified Aromatherapist and am really sorry you had this experience. Perhaps you should have talked with the therapist either during or after the massage. I would always asked my clients how they had enjoyed the experience and would have been really hurt if they had not but did not tell me. Thankfully, that never happened. Do not let this put you off but try another sometime and this time, chat with the therapist first and explain why this massage was bad, she should, if she is good, avoid the pitfalls.

The Masseuse should have their qualifications framed and in public view - did you ascertain they WERE trained and qualified?

Pixie: you say you had an aromatherapy massage which was 'the worst ever massage'. What sort of massage were you expecting/hoping for from an aromatherapy session? You haven't actually said what aspect of the treatment you found so bad so would be interested to know. For example, if you were suffering from muscle tension in neck & shoulder areas and were hoping for 'firm pressure' massage to ease that, then aromatherapy wouldn't be suitable as its a soothing, smoother technique, using a mix of essential oils. If you were given a blend of oils that didn't suit you, that kind of massage could possibly make you feel a bit 'out of sorts'. The other posters are right though: any 'therapist' must be fully qualified (and insured!) and their professional certificates displayed. Have to remember though, you're in TRNC so standards and qualifications will inevitably be different.

Hi Pixie,

I was thinking about staying at the Mercure for 3 weeks at the end of Feb onwards. Any negatives?

This is really strange as I have a massage there every month, they more than compere to others I have had abroad, I wouldn't go back otherwise. A friend of mine has just been for the first time and she was impressed, and I know others that are regulars, they must have had an off moment.

In reply to message 7 I went to the reception of the spa center and asked for a relaxing massage. I said I was very tense and wanted to get relaxed. She recommended this massage to me.

There were 2 asians who I thought would give me the massage but she called someone called mina who is turkish (dot know if turkish. turkish cyp, or something else like arab, kurdish) and she started the massage. I felt her start on my legs and mentioned she should be a little harder.

At the end of the massage I felt exactly the same as I went in. Normally I feel like my whole body is relaxed and I want to sleep for an hour or so. I just feel like a huge load has been lifted off my shoulders. Its hard to explain. This massage left me feeling tense.

When the manager of the spa got in touch with me he explained it was quite normal because of the' touch' that may not have suited me. I told him that this had never happened before. I just felt like she didnt know what areas to press and where to be firm.

It was more like I was getting a gentle stroking than anything else. And it only lasted 40 minutes instead of 50.

We has a fantastic holiday apart from that. Great facilitie, friendly staff, great food, excellent room and service. I would most definitly go again.

I am just very disappointed in the massage. Please let me know who does the möassaging message 12, so next time I can ask for the same person.

I must mention I had a friend from istanbul get a massage their the day before me and she also was thrilled, so probably another massuess, and when I did ask for qualifications I was gently ignored

Pixie, there are 2 very good Balinese girls (actually one has just left to work somewhere in Lefkosa, her name is Desak if anyone finds her) the other is Made, pronounced Ma'day. She knows the pressure I like but always asks, as they should do. Better luck next time.

Pixie: Sounds like the 'masseuse' you were given wasn't fully trained. Bad luck, but you've been given loads of help & names from others on this thread so all will be well in future, I'm sure.
