Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary-general, said today that the leaders of the rival Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities had pledged to continue talking and would redouble their efforts to reunify Cyprus despite strong separatist sentiments and scant progress in long-running peace talks.

"I'm encouraged that the two leaders personally assured me of their shared commitment for a comprehensive solution as early as possible," Ban said during a brief visit to Nicosia. "We will need even more courage and determination in the period ahead to bring these talks to a successful conclusion."

CONTINUED......

Ban's visit follows increased pressure from Britain, the EU and US. Time is thought to be running out. Presidential elections in northern Cyprus in April may further reduce the chances of a breakthrough if, as is widely expected, Dervis Eroglu, the current prime minister, defeats Talat's bid for a second term.

In Greek Cyprus, meanwhile, the Orthodox church, opposition parties, and leaders of the armed forces have urged Christofias not to give ground.

Even if they managed to cobble together an 'agreement', it would be 'kyboshed' by any mandatory ensuing referendum - end of story!

Wonder what would happen if, in the ensuing referendum, the South voted nay and the North aye?

Groucho - msg 4. The EU/UN would probably make all sorts of promises about relaxing embargoes etc and then do bugger all - the same as they did after the Annan plan.

However, we live in hope, so it would be a good idea for the TC's to vote YES and give themselves the sympathy vote, as the GC's will almost certainly vote NO.

tick.....tock........tick........tock

time is RUNNING OUT

Talat will be out on his arse come april.....

This statement by Mr moon is contrary to what chirsto has been saying recently.....he has been qouted as saying that they are no closer to a settlement now and the talks are going no where!

anyway Mr moon is off to try and solve the Israel and Palestine conflict tomorrow....good luck with that...the Israelis are even bombing UN 'safe' areas now!

Re message 8 perhaps Mr Moon will say about Israel and Palestine (and with apologies to Bill (No1doyen) in message 1) for requoting:

"I'm encouraged that the two leaders personally assured me of their shared commitment for a comprehensive solution as early as possible," during a brief visit to the Middle East. "We will need even more courage and determination in the period ahead to bring these talks to a successful conclusion."

What happened to leadership and integrity from the UN?

You mean the EU and UN have other things to bother about, cant believe that !

How long before Cyprus fatigue sets in and ROC is told the fate of Europe does not hang on what happens on Cyprus .Especially does it not hang on whether some third rate politicians nobody has heard of, decide to take the huff over what room Mr T meets Mr B in . A laughing stock. They think they are so important on the world stage that they can insult a UN team that they themselves asked to come. Privately Mr B and Mr D must be fuming.

Id like to be the fly on the wall on the plane the UN team fly home home in.

Whatever pledges the two leaders may have made to Mr B, it could be extremely difficult for them to be accepted by all the self appointed important minions under them. Comments made above are all true and apt. Eroglu can speak English I understand, but is made of different stuff to Talat, and I think is more on the side of Turkey than reunification. So whatever pledges Mr T and Mr C may have made, it could be impossible to implement them. So where are we? Back to square minus one, possibly, but at least this has all brought the Cyprus problem mpore to the fore of other nations, and all the advdertising could be of benefit to us in the north especially to those who are tyring to get the world to see the TRUE HISTORY!

The only reason the cyprus problem has been put on the back burner to the many other world conflicts over the past 40yrs is down to Turkeys peace process!

This ALONE had kept peace in this part of the world, and I for one am eternally grateful for that.

And as twisted as this may sound, I am now glad the gcs have taken the EU courts route. This will hopefully force an end to current status quo. One way or another. It's about time after 40 yrs Turkish Cypriots breathed and tasted Freedom.
