ANNOUNCING THE NEXT MCF-READING:

Reasons for and start of the Third Crusade, 1189-1192, including Richard the Lionheart’s conquest of Cyprus in 1191.

On request of TRNC residents, who were not able to attend the readings in 2008/9, Hans Doeleman (founder of the Medieval Cyprus Fellowship) will again deliver his illustrated introduction to the start of the Crusades movement and the important part that Cyprus played during the Third Crusade and later. It will be a much extended version of the 2008/9 readings (with new maps, seldom seen pictures and updated text).

Hey DC what about Reginald of Chatillon, he took cyprus before ritchie even thought about it in the spring of 1156 with the armenian king thoros. after the plunder the cypriots either purchased their freedom or were taken in chains to antioch, many were mutilated and sent to byzantium.

RE msg 3, LOvegod: Sorry, but Raynald of Châtillon (also Reynald, Reynold, Renald, or Reginald; French: Renaud de Châtillon, old French: Reynaud de Chastillon), (c. 1125 – July 4, 1187) didn't "take" Cyprus. He raided the island during the Second Crusade and took what the Crusaders needed while beleaguering Antioch (Atakia, Turkey). King Richard I Plantagenet (the Lionheart) was in command of the island of Cyprus after his "Blitz Krieg" - big factual difference!

P.S. And what did 'de Chastillon' do (had his soldiers done) when he met a Greek speaking Cypriot anywhere...?!

=> "Good old Reg" cut off the noses of the Greek speaking Cypriots he caught during his raid in Cyprus. Even the Pope wrote to him that he had gone a bit too far... The bloody raid itself was not a matter of concern to the Pope.

The Pope always knew that Reg an the boys were a great bunch of lads, he just wanted to spread catholic acts of charity an goodwill amoungst those orthodox heathens. The Muslims even put up a statue of Reg in Damascus an its still there to this day. Saladin got a bit pissy with Reg when he was a bit out of order with Saladins sister even when Reg tried to explain to him that e was just avin a laugh. But Saladin just couldnt see the funny side of it so he cut Reg's head off. Early end to a great career wouldnt you say ?

LOvegod, you certainly have an interesting and quite original look at history. However, I have to disagree with many of your statements in your four lines in msg 8... But I agree that his head was cut off in the end, while Guy de Lusignan (who, as King of Jerusalem, just had lost the decisive battle for the Holy land) was a frightened witness.
