Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu has said he will continue the negotiations in cooperation with Motherland Turkey if he wins the Presidential elections in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

`I want a solution more than anyone else as a person who knows very well what it means to govern under embargoes`, the Premier told the CNN Turk television channel.

Stressing that he will continue the talks in cooperation with Ankara if he is elected as President of the TRNC, Mr Eroglu ruled out the possibility for him to pursue different policies than Ankara.

Well that just sounds like him trying to appear statesmanlike. His posture has softened it would seem. Typical politics of popularity.

I hope the electorate see through this. One minute he says one thing to try and appease the hard-liners next it's all peace and love!

I'm not convinced he has any properly thought-out policies with which to influence the talks, which is possibly why he's not inside the process in any meaningful way.

Gavin, this was in another article:

Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu has said that a solution can only be possible ın Cyprus if the two sides consider each other as equal partners.

The Premier said that the UN Secretary General’s visit to Cyprus has once again proved that an agreement is far away.

A delegation from the TRNC War Veterans Association voiced support for Prime Minister Eroglu’s candidacy for President of the TRNC during a visit today.

Speaking during the visit, Prime Minister Eroglu said negotiations to settle the Cyprus Problem can always be held but stressed that the understanding that the Cyprus Turkish People will maintain their honorable existence will be maintained.

Troodo,

We damn him for mixed messages... one minute a hawk to those he thinks want to hear a hard line, next a bunny rabbit talking in soft conciliatory tones so as not to sound as though he rules out continuing in the talks.

How are the electorate meant to make any sense of that or know what his real intentions are other than to seek power?

We see this duplicity in all walks of life, he's no different than most power seekers. If he's no different then why vote for him?

Sorry but he just reminds me of the curly-haired pub loon character in the Fast show who agrees with the last view put forward no matter how extreme or diametrically opposed to the previous view.

No real gravitas behind the stance... just sound bite diplomacy.

Talat at least has a consistent message.

Whether you like it or not Eroglu will be the next Prime Minister and I personally think it will be a landslide victory in the first round. My perception is that the TC's have had enough and want to draw a line under past events and get on with their lives and they should be allowed to.
