PARIS — The United Nations secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, ended a three-day visit to Cyprus on Tuesday with reports saying his talks there in quest of a unity deal had been overshadowed by a diplomatic gaffe.

Mr. Ban visited the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mehmet Ali Talat, at his presidential office in northern Cyprus, setting off protests among Greek Cypriots, two Greek Cypriot newspapers, Phileleftheros and Simerini, reported on Tuesday. The anger reflected Greek Cypriot sensitivities about diplomatic maneuvers that could be taken as tacit recognition of the Turkish Cypriot enclave, which the Greek Cypriot authorities do not recognize.

Four Greek Cypriot political groups announced boycotts of a reception given by Mr. Ban on Monday evening. The Greek Cypriot protests showed the depths of ethnic and political hostilities that pre-dated the 1974 invasion but have become even more deeply entrenched since then.

"....overshadowed by a diplomatic gaffe" ??? what?

this isnt a diplomatic gaffe, this just wholly sums up the mentality of the Greek cypriots towards the Turkish cypriots. they wil do everything in there power to make it as difficult for us as possible.

It smacks of "Oh dear you went to see that nasty Mr Talat first, so it's handbags at twelve paces for you Mr Moon!"

Never mind the fact that their President has done exactly the same thing!

They really are pygmies...

The GC's have only themselves to blame for the TRNC's existance. If they had behaved themselves in the 50's and 60's and not tried to wipe out the TC's or try to join Cyprus with Greece then the Turkish Peace Operation of 1974 and the subsequent formation of the Turkish Cypriot state would have not been needed.

All explained by Downer. As usual its toys thrown out of prams by the gcs because the North for once is steeling their thunder. When will they grow up and stop behaving like little kids in the playground.Or perhaps that is doing little kids a disservice,

Paul.

Dear Paul

The GCs have this 'thing' about the existing UN sec council resolutions... IF anyone meets a TC elected representative the TCs talk about Ban meeting the 'President' at the 'Presidential Palace' - and many GCs think this is tantamount to 'recognition'

Sadly, this is all part of the tightrope the UN walk..

Looks like the truth about the gcs unwillingness to play ball is finally being circulated properly.Instead of being swept under the carpet,

Paul.

Hi Mark re-mess 10,

Its all to do with tc only being officially recognised by Turkey isnt it.So any chance they (tcs)get to put one over on the gcs then they will (and who can blame them after all the crap they have had)Seeing Moon in Talats presedntial palace was music to my ears.Good on Talat for allowing it to be arranged. Also could prove to be a good vote winner as well,

Paul.

This is what really gets on my wick!

Can't the UN, EU, rest of the bloody world see with open eyes how downright petty, nasty and more importantly DIFFICULT the GCs are being?

For crying out loud how can anyone reason with these people when they react like this? We are supposed to be on the brink of a lasting peace process to solve a long and difficult problem and yet they act like children over any minute detail: " oh no, you can't call it a presidetial palace"

" you can't refer to talat as this or that" god knows what christo is like behind closed doors when sat at the table!

seriously can't the EU or UN see how difficult they are being?

Damn them all to hell !
