Last week, I left the Cyprus Forum. Things really get ugly there for anyone who is pro-TRNC. In my case, the knives were out for me because I am a non-Cypriot (an exaptriate New Zealander now a United States citizen) who had the temerity to say that the Turkish Cypriot people deserve to live in their own country.

So, I have some words of advice for you chaps and chapettes here on Cyprus44: unless you really like to set involved in ugly so-called 'debates' (which really are threads devoted to name-calling, accusations, and threats), I would not advise you to join that forum. If nothing else, it proved to me the intractability and deep-rooted hostility of the majority of Greek Cypriots towards the Turkish Cypriots and their supporters.

Why not put in some kindly thoughts to the readers of Cyprus44. After all, Kiwi country had to sort out their integration of those wonderful Maori's with all the others who went to the beautiful c\ountry (including three of my cousins and an old friend in the arts world). Northern Cyprus needs all the support it can get by way of kindly thoughts to ward off the 'evil darts' of some Greek Cypriot thoughts.

Incidentally, there are many Greek Cypriots who do not participate on any forums who are kindly and loving and wouldlove to see the island have a unitred l.ife style which wouldbe good for ALL.

So, be an answer, not a refugee!

Blessings on you!

There are reasonable GC's there who wish to chat and properly debate, but the abusers of the forum - and forum contributors - drown them out. Regrettable.

expatkiwi - it always seems to be the same people over there who make the most objectionable postings - a group of around 6-10.

You have to laugh (in a way) that the subject which arouses the most ill-feeling, insults, etc. (with the exception of the Orams' outcome) is what goes on on Cyprus 44!!

Having said that, I have met a lot of very nice Greek Cypriots over the years.

Two of the GC's there managed to sniff out my USA Address and contact information, and started to tell folk out in the CF how to get it... It seemed that certain folk there wanted to take their disagreement with me over the Cyprus Problem to a new level! When things get that bad, then one has to leave.

Sorry Expatkiwi, I do not really understand what you are saying. Are you being 'chased' by e mails and/or phone calls by people who are being intimidating? If so, cannot they be tracked down, or dealt with as advice toLilli on another thread.

Not sure wha tyou mean baout ' certain folk........ etc...' And when you talk of 'leave' I assume you mean from the forum? And do you mean this forum or another one?

If I had any intention of HIDING,I'd have registered under different NAME and IDENTITY.

Marie,

The prime folk who are going out of their way on CF to make my life a misery for supporting my TRNC are "Get Real", "Boomerang" and "B25".

I have been living in Larnaca for the last 18 months and use the Cyprus Eastern Forum. The same 'tunnel vision' largely prevails there too. To try to give a balanced view of the Cyprus problem is scorned, usually by Anglo Greek Cypriots. I have to agree that buying former GC property in the north is morally dubious and risky. Similarly, I can't really blame people for taking a punt, as the prices were/are less than half of prices in the south.

The hatred and fear on both sides IMO will only be eased through education, cultural exchanges, schools linking etc. and it will take a long time and never be totally successful. The TC & GC people can only really communicate in English as most no longer know the other's language.

It is all very sad and terrible things were done on both sides.

Until the Greek and Turkish flags no longer flutter in defiance of eachother and are replaced by something they can both identify with, there is little hope.

GreenArmy,

Having lived in the South (pre-74) and now live in the North I think I can be fairly certain that the Turkish Cypriot Flag will always fly over the Turkish People. There is a very strong bond and feeling for the flag in the Turkish people - something like there used to be for the British and the Union Jack but stronger still. Sadly the South will follow any flag provided it has nothing Turkish about it and in some way points to Greece.

Education would work but that outlet has been blocked by the church in the South and that is the only rule of order there - there is no chance of changing the mindset of people who still insist on calling Istanbul, Constantinople!

It is a sad state of affairs indeed and I honestly think the only solution is partion and two separate country's with an establish border between them - never mind the EU, in the most part it is not wanted here anyway. No answer will ever be found on Southern Web sites - only hatred!

You're probably correct. There are some 'realistic' people on this side but not enough. Everything to do with Greece is worshipped and they seem to want it all. At present, they appear to be banking on any Turkish EU aspirations and litigation through the courts to bring the TRNC AND Turkey down. I can only see the reverse happening.

Fairly put Green Army..(is that another Norwich supporter?), however the morality of the current issue got me thinking. What are countries anyway? Surely they were all founded out of war and violence. Most land was got by someone hitting some one over the head with a large stick or more recently by the same thing but done by lawyers, who are often no better then an invading army on the morality stakes. Before I got involved in the North of Cyprus and then was bothered to look at the recent history I may have gone along with the Greek version having holidayed in Greece for decades. Now though on the morality issue it looks like the Turkish 1974 involvement was defensive, and not a conquering empire thing. Reading Durrel's Bitter Lemons gave me a good insight into events before and leading up to 1974. They say history is written by the conquerors but now it is written by the lawyers and politicians who seem as corrupt, if not more so, than ever.

After my article last week about the cyprus problem in the London Turkish Gazette and other places, I got loads of personal abuse from the members of that forum. The fact that they resort to childish, personal comments with no sort of debate or discussion tells you that they know it's true, IMHO. Some of the personal comments that they made about me gave me some quality laugh-out-load moments.

Waddo,

I agree. The TRNC flag is actually quite a beautiful flag, and IMHO, it will continue to fly.

The loonies there think I'm back as some guy who goes by the signon of "The RocK". This person says he hails from Gibraltar (which explains his name), but the "posse of prejudice" have started to accuse him of being me! I've already made it clear that I'm off that forum (both as Expatkiwi and my other signon as Utu) and I've no intention of contributing anything further there. If they choose to believe it or not, it's up to them, but "The Rock" better get set for some bad dissing...
