Message 8 I 100% agree this persons language is out of order, now becoming a nuisance. Funnily enough they remind me of someone called Godzilla who used to post on here! Chris

Spearfishing is illegal when using an *aqualung (*SCUBA=self-contained underwater breathing aparatus), but not, as far as I know, if only snorkelling. Personally, I believe ALL spearfising should be banned not only in Cyprus, but most areas of the Med. To shoot a Grouper, for instance, is nothing short of a criminal act of destruction. We used to take (tourist) divers to see the Groupers in their caves at various sites around Paphos - we couldn't prevent the 'word getting out', or Cyps following us to the dive sites. Pretty soon there were no Grouper anywhere. 'George' our favourite and largest Grouper fell victim to the Cyps. He weighed about 30 Kg and was likely 80+ years old. We used to carry peeled boiled eggs to feed him on. We placed an egg on the palm of the hand and George would approach to within 6" and literally suck the egg into his mouth - it was fascinating watching the egg 'fly' into his mouth. One day, George disappeared. - Cont'd

Cont'd........ Later, in a bar, a Cyp was boasting that he'd shot this huge grouper with a 'reefy' gun - the smallest speargun available. How many marvellous underwater photo opportunities and pleasure George had given so many people... Despite many of us lobbying the RoC government, they have no marine parks, and I don't know of any in TRNC. BAN SPEARFISHING NOW!

So, Letty, are you selective when it comes to deciding which type of fish to shoot - or do you 'have a go' at anything that comes within range? Yes, I wish spearfishing banned - island wide. However, I, and I'm sure many others, would be most interested to read about your underwater photograpic experiences and equipment...

that 80 year old fish must have been a little chewy and tenak we dont kill grouper they are beutifull fish im also a diver and prefer to look than kill but saying dont kill that fish is the same as dont kill that cow or lamb but we will still eat it if its served up right or wrong

Who is 'we', racoonchic? Cattle and sheep are farmed for human consumption. In the Med, especially in Cyprus, please only shoot any marine creature with a camera!
