I suggest you research this one on this forum. There have been many threads on the subject due to the high costs of import duty & tax plus the difficult rules & process.

Hi Bikerboy.

Do NOT bring it through the South. Well not unless you, or the vehicle never go there again.

The "bubbles" will make you take the vehicle out from Limassol within 6 months. They will not allow you to export it to the North. So,even though it will be here, they will assume that it has been imported to the South without the Duty!

PS. I believe if you haven't owned it from new and it's over 5 years old, you cannot import it here anyway. But please confirm this.

i dont think you will be able to make it legal as of the age if you have not owned it for over the 5 years then you will be driving around ilegal and stand to lose it

You will not be able to use the car here because of it's age & you haven't owned it since new. No difference if you try to bring it in via the South. South route is not advisable for any car anyway. You clearly have not done your homework!!!

This is all assuming you want to import it permanently. You may be able to use it for a year, but then you will have to take it back to the UK.

polo still for sale you may be interested when they confiscate yours but seriously a car over 5 years can be kept for i year as a temp import every 1 to 3 months you got to go to lefkosa and get your yellow paper stamped to remain legal after i year you must take it out via the entry point not the back door otherwise you wont get your exit paper and you will be charged /fined until you can bring proof of exit. im speaking from personal experience so trust me theres no thinkin you can outsmart the customs with scams boasted in bars or on here ..good luck

Unless you thrive on hassle, you'd be insane to bring that car - whatever anyone might tell you!

Due to the economy, or lack of, here, the place is flooded with cars for sale - you should be able to score yourself a bargain!

For example: just think of the number of Brits that are leaving - most are at their wits end, not being able to sell their cars and realising they can't take them back to UK....

Act smart!

I drove my car to TRNC in June 2008. It's a 12 year old Citroen Saxo Regestered in my wifes name who has owned it for 3 years. I have been able to tax it in Lefkosa every 6 months. When I taxed it in December 2009, I was told by the customs office that this will be the last time I would be able to tax it without importing it in June 2010. They sent me to the relevant office and after showing all the paper work I was told that I could import it with a fee of approx £1000. This was good news to me as I was prepared to scrap the car as its worth nothing.

Simple answer, do not bother.

Proper answer, if over 5 years no chance as you have not owned from new.

Bring it through south, do not bother. All too much hassle

Msg 7

Your 1st message said you were BRINGING your car to the TRNC, not you were THINKING of bringing your car to the TRNC. Sounded like you'd already made up your mind to me?

Bikerboy your best bet is to take a copy of your log-book to Lefkosa customs and they will tell you if you can import it and how much it is likely to cost (note the word likely as it will probably change on the actual day). I believe there was an amnesty last year for people who were waiting to pay their duty so it is possible that this is why Jachin was told he could pay the duty this year.

I think your comments to scruff are totally uncalled for, although I know she can well fight her own corner.

All the advice you are being given indicates that bringing a vehicle at the age it ie etc is inappropriate ie it will more than likely be confiscted within 3 months of you arriving here, if indeed you do.

Bikerboy, contact the Turkish Embassey in Uk, providing you have owned the car for more than 5 yrs you can import it to TRNC, be prepared to pay 40% tax plus $3600 dollars in duty. We are thinking to bring my wifes Merc over and have had all this confrimed by the Embassey. Her car is 10yrs old and still in great condition so do want want to part with it. Bit like the wife really!!!

Suggest you re-read message 9, or any others that have already warned you of the consequences.
