Cyprus was once the wealthiest nation in the known world. It was during the Copper and Bronze Ages when the island's rich natural copper resources were exported to other countries.

Are any of these mines still being worked?

Bill, even in the Middle Ages Famagusta (the commercial hub between Europe and the East) was considered to be the wealthiest town in the Mediterranean and possibly in all of Europe. The stories about immensely rich merchants are incredible but true. On the other hand Famagusta was considered one of the most unhealthy towns in the world, because of the swamps (mosquitos, malaria) around the place! There are still copper (and gold!) mines in Cyprus, but they are abandoned. However, in the Lefke area (not far away from Güzelyurt or medieval Morphou) there has been a survey to find out if modern copper mining could be made profitable again.

RE msg 4, Bill: "Immensely rich". Example: at a certain wedding of a merchant's daughter the guests where allowed to grab a handful of pearls and other jewels each when they departed the wedding party. Another example: the St Peter and St Paul church was built by a certain merchant after 'one' ! deal with the people in the Levant. More?

All,

I live in Abu Dhabi which has been touted as the richest city in the world.

Of course it is crazy expensive & congested.

So why do I always long for my visits to Northern Cyprus?

It's the people, sea & mountain views that are priceless.

Millionaires aspire to have the same views as ordinary people in Northern Cyprus

Would I buy.......for capital gains, no; but for the sheer magic of Northern Cyprus, it simply cannot be beaten!!

We take for granted the natural beauty in Northern Cyprus: Go outisde tomorrow morning, have a good look around & say toyourself 'what value can you put on this'

There's your answer..........
