| Without getting into the whole TC, GC debate etc and throwing mud at each other Was one of the issue with the orams case that they converted, knocked, took over an existing GC house or was the land they have was completely green field which they then built on ? If it was a green field would this have made a difference also what happens if the exchange land which was green field now has a complex on it which is now split with a number of properties with deeds either already provided to each owner or partly split between the villa owners and a local TC- builder, owner Second if you are a UK resident could you claim squatter rights in the same way as a squatter could technically own a property after x number of years- Though I think in the UK a squatter would have to announce their claim many thanks |

| I'm sure squatters rights wouldn't work over here. |

| mess 3 - Molly is right... "exchange" is the expression the TRNC govt used - but as the rightful owner (ie the Greek Cypriot) wasn't party to the deal, its not really an exchange.... I liken it to: Someone steals your car, knocks up a log for it and then claims it is his - wouldn't you, the rightful owner be more than a little pissed ?? This is why (IMHO) there will never be a solution, because its going to have to go to a referundum and the GC's won't agree unless they each receive squillions in compensation... ok soap box being put away..... |

| Hi trnc55, I don't think it matters if there was a property on the land or not. The TRNC government gave Turkish Cypriots land in the north equivelant to what they had left in the south, when the island was divided. This is what is known as exchange land. Unfortunately the Greek Cypriots were not asked if this was ok and did not agree to this. The TRNC government now issue title deeds to this land and many people have these deeds. I am sure that many Greek cypriots would be prepared to accept compensation for this land, as they would never wish to come back and live in the north. Who will pay the compensation is debatable, will it be the government, will it be the builder/developer. Or will it be the present owner, ie the British buyer? There will be some Greek Cypriots who will not want compensation and will fight like Apostalidas through the courts of Europe to get back what they see as rightfully theirs but I doubt there will be many.
