If it is Guidos hope they hang on a bit longer as business will pick up everyone is slow at the moment but it will soon be summer and they will be busy again. In the meantime it must be soul destroying with empty seats in restaurants at this time of year.

Everyone is having a hard time at the moment and "we" all need to help out where we can!

Liz & Guido do SO much for everyone & anything and I think we should do the same for them in these hard times.

Lets all give them some support.

Plus I here a new lunch menu is coming soon.

Pop In at a lunchtime for a tea/coffee.

Its a case of "use it or loose it". Show your support folks

I guess if you want the truth you must ask Guido's themselves, but I had no idea of Stumble Inn - they haven't been there for too long, have they?

Life is tough for many folk at the moment, and I agree with Tootie, that if it is Guido's (ans I suspect it might be) then it would be a great loss to community, and the only thing we can do is pack them out day after day. But I am afraid that the money I spend there wouldn';t help much - an occasional coffee!

I have just had a look at the 'For Sale' list. Personally, I don't blame Liz and Guido for trying to cut their losses. I think they have tried very hard in trying to make a success of Guido's (which I think they have) in the face of the adversity they faced. However, there comes a time when banging your head against a brick wall loses its attraction. They are 2 lovely people who have given pleasure to a lot of people and I am very sad that they have reached this decision. They have been responsible for a lot of people on this forum becoming friends (themselves included) and I, for one, would wish them every success in the future. They deserve it. I don't think anyone can deny that they have tried their very best, so congratulations the pair of you.

Good luck and God bless.

Well, thanks Liz - I do think 'beautiful' (espcially where I'm concerned) is a little misplaced, but I do appreciate youur feelings.

Now, get yourself off to bed - which is where I am going at last. Should tell you, that we have had, at last, some photos from Dan - 139 of them - none of them referenced, apart from "East to West Without Knickers or Vest"

They look well and happy.

The reason the TRNC is in the state it's in is not just about the Orams decision, they were just one issue, the main problem is the government, who have no idea how to run a country. Don't get me wrong, I love it here, warts and all, but there is still a long way to go and changes will have to be made. For instance, why is building carrying on when there are still loads of finished properties unsold, why is planning permission being given for even more shops to be built when there are hundreds still unoccupied, it does not make any sense at all.

With restaurants there needs to be an agreed and fair rent/lease to allow business to thrive in a very difficult market, this cost should be fixed for say five years to give people a chance, nobody can say that Guidos hasn't tried it's very best but it must be like going uphill on rollerskates.

Lastly for now, people need to pack in posting such negative posts, especially people who have left the country for a long holiday abroad.

N.N. may be a BIT Negative about TRNC. But if you know him you will realise he is a clever guy, Who does talk alot of sense.

Anyway I for one wish I was on along holiday somwhere warm (with his girlfriend) .

With regard to Restaurant,s and bars etc. I feel for the people trying to run them, I know what it's like.

But one major problem here is that there are far to many for the size of the population, And they just keep opening more and more,

Does anyone really think in this economic climate that a bar or restaurant here is going to be a good long term investment,

mess 27 - Hatty, my comments are that of frustration...

We all bought here to "live the dream", but in light of what has gone over the last few years, Orams included, the reality is far from that.......

And whilst i am on my jollies in the sun - i will be back in a few months time to face the harsh realities.......

as far as Liz and Guido are concerned - they have had the stuffing kicked out of them by the TRNC - but every day they get up and give it their best shot.....

Its a pitty that the TRNC Gov't haven't done things to help us Brits..

Remember the Property complaints office ?? !!

RE msg 33, JohnnyLee: (...) But one major problem here is that there are far to many for the size of the population, (...)

=> Nail on the head. More than 1020 restaurants on a population of plusminus 250.000 (and many of them never go to any restaurant because making enough money to buy food for home use is difficult enough).

What Guido and Liz haven't said is if they have had any kind of posijtive 'sniff' at the business. And if so, where are they going?

Back to Wales and the rain? Where? It really is a rotten shame that their kind of catering is out of place where they are - I reckon. They should be in a nice, good establishment on the sea shore, and OWNED by them. It is rent and gov taxes that kill businesses.

What worries me is that nice people are forced into a corner, and cannot see where on earth to go.

Hope that doesn't happen to Liz and Guido. There has to be an answer.

I might have supplied it, butn my lottery win didn't happen last night, but some luckysoul inU.K got 50 million smackers.

Hi all, First of all can I thank each and everyone of you for your messages and emails. The situation here is very dire and the lack of customers and not just us, means no money coming in to restock or pay the rent. We do not want to go but if it carries on like this we will have no choice. Marie you are so right where do we go from here, short of a lottery win until the summmer season starts we may have no choice. We compete against free buffets with free entertainment which is so hard. I thank you all for the lovely comments, its made me cry several times. However in the meantime its buisness as usual with a new menu and a different lunch time format, to be announced soon xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

One of the biggest tragedies on the island is paying rent and trying to run a successful business. Most of the people I know paying rent find that it is almost impossible to make enough profit to have money for themselves afterwards.

There is much to be said for owning the premises, but of course if you don't have money you are in the hands of the landlords.

I know of other peole who have been forced out of business because of high rentals, and then often the premises stand empty and the landlords are getting no rent at all. Daft, because everyone could be happy if only there was a bit more realism to the rental market.

Poor Guido's is but one of the many who are victims. Can;t the landlord's be reasoned with that a couple of bob regularly is better than a couple of pounds once in a while.

oh marie if only. What saddens me most is all the lovely people who have become friends. You know yourself how many are leaving here.My last 4tl went on dog food. I still beleive in a miracle please be to god. In fairness the landlord knows the prob and comes around each night to check how many we have in and gives the cyprus shrug, however we cant let it mount up, its not fair on him xxxxxx

Hello Lilli,

I still have the pleasure to come, of meeting you and Guido. I have heard so much about you two and the lovely restaurant you own and the excellent food you serve. Along with the friendship you have given a lot of people and animals.

just a suggestion, have you ever thought of bringing in an investor to help in the financial side of things. Cos, I’m sure your Restaurant is a gold mine in the making. I only wish I had some spare cash to offer.

Possibly some theme nights in the middle of the week may help. Salsa, Quiz, card schools etc. I’m also sure a lot the forum users and others can put their heads together in ways to help in the problems you are undergoing.

The Island will only stand to lose a well run business.

regards,

Anon.

Measey that is a great sentiment, but unfortunately friendship does not always mean one can support financially, and that is what Guido's needs. I am one of the 'meanies' that just goes for coffee (just because........) and even with hundress like me they would not make enough.

But it is good that lots of people are coming up with ideas - it means more hard work for them, but hopefully willhelp to re-dress the financial imbalance.

Guess the only thing I could volunteer for is doing the washing up.

As for articles in papers, yes, I could do a write up of the restaurant (but I don't work for CT! - sorry folks), but more people read this page! Maybe I could get something into ZOOM of one of the special nights, but it has to be a special night with lots of lovely photos of lovely people who will then buy the magazine cos their photo is init.

So, Lilli - when is the next 'posh' do with the 'beautiful people' so we can write of your 'beautiful grub'.?

Sorry I'm a bit late (yet again) on catching up with this thread. Liz will know, by now that I have e-mailed off board.

Mr Measey - please, please, don't think I am having a pop at you again - because I'm not - honestly. However, you have, quite recently, urged us to contact Liz about her animal problem and you are doing so again, to give her and Guido some moral support. Have you any idea how many friends Liz and Guido have - or how many e-mails of support they have had from us? Look I know you mean well, but I really can't see the reason your are urging us to contact her and Guido all the time. If you were to read the messages on the thread thoroughly, perhaps it might give you a better perspective?

Just a thought.

Hi Lilli, just another thought, could you perhaps have an informal meeting with all your supporters to have a 'brain storming' session, if you both are there to listen to ideas without the hassle of cooking etc, some ideas might come forth. Sometimes something not even related to the restaurant might come forward. As they say many heads together, many ideas!!! ......

If any one out there could organise a meeting without having to worry about food ect, please can they give this a thought......

It is a well known fact that owning the freehold / having no rent to pay, is crucial when running a bar/restaurant, particularly in tough economic times. Those in that fortunate position can cut right down on costs until things pick up. Has the smoking ban impacted negatively too ?

as my Uncle Percy would say "running a business in the TRNC is like pushing a ping pong ball up mount Everest using only your nose..."

Keep your chin up Liz and Guido.....

It could be a lot worse - no strike that.....

Sad news.

Unfortunately I don't think any restaurant that isn't owned outright has a chance in hell of surviving at present.

Rents, wages and the price of food will all need to drop, or else the TRNC economy will implode this year.

My thoughts Mark

I arranged get together's at Guido's for over a year and they were a great success but I don't think it will help in the long run with all the rising cost and people keep putting up the rent when you cant afford what it is now, what is the answer ?? get out while you can and cut your losses, a Chef like Guido can always get a great job, good luck to you both

I'm sorry to hear of any business struggling. My brother owned a restaurant years ago and I remember him saying that 'no matter how good your food was, if no one crossed your door you would struggle to survive'.

Location wise his was very similar, in that he got no passing pedestrian trade. He maintained that is what killed his business, and had no 'free food' competition.

I wish them all the best in the future.

Hi Liz, so sorry to here you might be having to give it all up, but I know you have had so much stress this last year, not with just lack of business but all the animals as well. Unfortunately, without seeming negative, however many ideas people come up with, people just do not have the money to spend to go out so much, and there aren't the tourist. I have to agree with Sheila, to cut your losses and don't get even deeper into debt, if you have to work, then work for someone else and make sure you get paid. So many bars and restaurants are closing their doors now, it is getting worse for all of us. You also having the added huge problem of the animals, and they alone cost a lot of money to keep and feed. I know my stray cats cost so much on top of the cost of my own animals. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. Stella x

Why not come along tomorrow at 12 and support Liz and Guido, we are all trying to get them back on their feet. So join in with the other 30 odd people that will be their for a buffet lunch. Price 15tl per head. If you can't afford it why not just pop in for a coffee and say hello.
