Genuine complains from brits abroad Actual statements from guests. (Survey by Thomas Cook and ABTA) "I think it should be explained in the brochure that the local store does not sell proper biscuits like custard creams or ginger nuts." "It's lazy of the local shopkeepers to close in the afternoons. I often needed to buy things during 'siesta' time - this should be banned." "On my holiday to Goa in India , I was disgusted to find that almost every restaurant served curry. I don't like spicy food at all." "We booked an excursion to a water park but no-one told us we had to bring our swimming costumes and towels." A woman threatened to call police after claiming that she'd been locked in by staff. When in fact, she had mistaken the "do not disturb" sign on the back of the door as a warning to remain in the room.. "The beach was too sandy." "We found the sand was not like the sand in the brochure. Your brochure shows the sand as y ellow but it was whit

| A guest at a Novotel in Australia complained his soup was too thick and strong. He was inadvertently slurping the gravy at the time. "Topless sunbathing on the beach should be banned. The holiday was ruined as my husband spent all day looking at other women." "We bought 'Ray-Ban' sunglasses for five Euros (£3.50) from a street trader, only to find out they were fake." "No-one told us there would be fish in the sea. The children were startled." "It took us nine hours to fly home from Jamaica to England , yet it only took the Americans three hours to get home." "I compared the size of our one-bedroom apartment to our friends' three-bedroom apartment and ours was significantly smaller." "The brochure stated: 'No hairdressers at the accommodation'. We're trainee hairdressers - will we be OK staying here?" "There are too many Spanish people. The receptionist speaks Spanish. The food is Spanish. Too many foreigners." | At Bellapais a couple of years ago I actually heard one elderly lady (who'd arrived on a GC coach) explain to another that 'all of those lovely houses down there are occupied by Turkish soldiers'............ I felt like kicking her over the parapet. |

Brits are the same in N Cyprus. I have heard some horrendous comments over the past few years. And from seemingly educated and intelligent people. We shopped at Dolphin stores in Limassol in the late 60s to support the local economy. In walked a couple of squaddies in civvies and walked straight to the front of the queue. When challenged they advised that Brit servicemen should not queue behind "wogs". It's that old "empire" thing again!!!

Whilst on a Greek beach thirty odd years ago I overheard a conversation between two Northern teenagers, one saying to the other,"Can't wait to get back to England to get some proper English food, a Chinese or Indian"! Richard

Last summer I had friends staying we went to a lovely local (Turkish) hotel/restaurant in Alsancak. On the next table there were 12 local expats getting louder by the minute according to the amount of Efes consumed!! the polite waiter brought their order - some had ordered fish and chips. He put the beautifully cooked local cipura (garnished with lemon and herbs) down then another waiter arrived with platefuls of salad and (freshly cooked ) chips. Well - what a commotion - one customer stood up - oy you - at the waiter - I ordered fish .n chips - and gesturing indignantly to his plate - not this lot. Ai'm not complainin like - but just so you'll know for future - when we orders fish 'n chips we don't want all this lot with 'eds 'n tails - but proper stuff like with batter and chips on same plate!! Is it a case if you can't beat them join them or just lose the will to live!! At least they didn't demand mushy peas on the side! Why do I love watching Benidorm!! Joan Joan

joanie1 - I love watching Benidorm for the same reasons - "cringeworthy" Does anyone else (when abroad) sometimes feel ashamed to be British? rowlo - or, the three generations of one family all wearing football strips - grand-dad, grand-ma, mum, dad and the kids No-one over the age of about 11 should be seen, in public, wearing a football strip IMHO.

All these people were really nicely dressed - smart casual - makes it even more confusing! Also would appear to have lived here for quite a few years. Not a foreign country - just England in the sun! Joan

Actually, I don't blame those Brits for protesting that they didn't get what they ordered! They may as well have brought a boney old carp in their hand luggage and asked the waiter to toss that in the pan, cos the result would have been exactly the same - a 'gobful' of scales and bones - yuk - chunder!!!

joanie - yes, I do take your point; I have seen the same, and, as you say, confusing (or it can be). When we're dressed 'normally' it can throw people off the 'scent'. I think it's a ruse Tenakoutou - now, come on, you're from the Antipodes (said as it's written, in good old Blighty). My son first visited Australia some 5 years ago and is now there on his fourth visit. He loves it, and would move there tomorrow if he had enough points. An English degree is of no use (it's not a great deal of use in the UK, to be honest with you). He first tasted Mahi Mahi (is the spelling correct?) in Os, and absolutely loved it. However, I don't think he would have ordered it in batter, with chips and mushy peas (at least, I hope not) Regards Jean

BRITS ON TOUR. He - skimpy shorts, no shirt, a beer belly that has been supplied by brewery for many years; She - a bikini top that is 6 sizes too small, boobs that look like they have served 6 kids, shorts that must be painful to wear. When you see them coming towards you in Girne High Street you just want to crawl into the nearest sewer, it will probably be cleaner. these people think they look gorgeous and the fact they have no respect for local population means they get treated accordingley then moan a bucket ful. OK back to bed!!!!!

Many years ago we were on holiday in Alanya, the hotel we were staying at had only catered for English guests for a couple of weeks and were still getting used to their likes and dislikes. One evening we were in a queue waiting to choose our meal from the absolutely vast selection on offer, being served by the most polite young men and women, the Englishman in front of me took one look and said, very loudly, " I don't want none of that Turkish muck, I want proper English food". I have to admit I cringed, just before I saw red, I couldn't stop myself from advising him, quietly and politely, that perhaps he should stick to Blackpool for his holidays and not attempt to broaden his horizons. Why oh why do people have to behave like this when they are abroad, and these are the same people who complain about foreigners living in England. It makes me so ashamed at times to be British.

On holiday at Riverside there were a couple who were propping the bar up when my wife and I came in. the barman called me over and asked if I would advise the couple on where to go as they had hired a car for one day. I gave them some advice on places to visit. The next evening when we entered the bar there they were on their favourite seats and I asked them if they had had a nice day and where they went. The woman said they had only got a few miles nad there was a car boot sale and she4 was able to get 3 t-shirts for a £1 so she had got 9 and then proceeded to show them to us and everyone else in the bar. She failed to take into account the cost of the hire car.
