The entrance to a rugby pitch, maybe the precursor to Twickenham!

RE msg 3, hatty: Of course!

RE msg 4, Brinsley: Reading your contributions to several threads I fully understand why the Lowlanders (now Netherlanders) didn't want New Zealand, when they (it's disputed) discovered your native country.

Answer Msg 1

It must be the gateway to paradise where Abel Tasman once sat and kicked himself for not setting down on 'gods own soil' and claim it for himself and his fellow clog-makers!

Hint-3: "The top ..... .... was for the Royal Lusignan family and the highest French (Anglo-Norman) nobility, when it was too hot in the Royal palace in Nicosia (medieval names Ledra, Cossia and many bastardizations) and St Hilarion castle was used as the summer residence..."

Hint-4: Two words, count the dots. "The small pictured gate is also known as a ....... ....". And in English castles (usually at the back) they were used for the same purpose...

Well, two hours to go, before this quiz expires... I think I'm going to win this time... Hint-5, maybe too easy... The dots in previous posts: 1 : "S.... p..." and the second word for the same gate: "P...... g...".

Well, being in the back, I guess it could be the "postern gate"

Hatty: amazing! However: 1/3 point - because what is the other name? And why did the Lusignan Kings build them>?

This must be it, a "sally-port, in order to rush out for defence, strike or whatever.

1/3 point for thomarge!

The score after three quizzes: 1 2/3 Hatty and 1/3 for thomarge (although it's sally port and not sally-port )!

There are three sally ports in St Hilarion castle, one at every level. Level-1: in the eastern wall (escape for men-at-arms to Kyrenia), level-2: if the castle was about to be taken by an enemy the lower nobility could escape to Zeytinlik (Ottoman Turk since 1571 and later Cypriot Turk for centuries), where the Knights Templar had stables with fresh horses 24/7 available. The foundation of the stables can still be seen in old Zeytinlik (the village Zeytinlik we know today is much younger). The third and most important sally port gave the Lusignan Royal family and all the important nobles a chance to escape to Karmi (now Karaman) via the slopes of the Kyrenia mountain range. Here's the picture of the sally port at the second level of St Hilarion Castle: http://www.allcrusades.com/BB_pics/S3500557_72_3.jpg

Hi Hatty.

I there is still a free ticket for the next Medieval Cyprus Fellowship lecture: "The Secrets of St Hilarion Castle!" to be had, then I shall hereby relinquish any and all dubious claims that I may, or may not have had, to said ticket. At the moment I am battling heavy snows and coooold weather here in Norway. Low so far (January) was C -39.4. That's cold.

When that is said and done, I would have loved going to that lecture, free ticket or not, as I am particular fond of "old stones".
