Dear DC,

I would call "this" castellations, and they "suffer" from erosion ( caries) .

RE msg 3, Clarissa2: Well done - and you taught me a new word: "castellations", which I usually call "battlements" or (French) "merlons"! And "caries" as your answer to my question is also right. Sea (salt), sun, wind and rain are the main reasons for the erosion in (Northern) Cyprus and even the 8-900 year old castles will eventually have to surrender. A heavy earthquake - which can happen any day again in Cyprus - may be the end of big parts of the castles in the Kyrenia mountain range.

=> Clarissa2, you won a free ticket: please let me know if you wish to visit the next lecture of the Medieval Cyprus Fellowship: "The Secrets of St Hilarion Castle!" (Wednesday, February 24, 2.30 pm, doors open 2 pm, venue: Denizhan Bar & Restaurant, Alsancak). Mail me at mcf.trnc@gmail.com .

Re: Quiz -4 Msg 3

Dear DutchCrusader,

Dank u.

I am very honoured.

I am also very sorry that I can not attend your lecture on the 24th of February as I am not in TRNC.

Can I please use the ticket for your lecture in the future?

I do not often look at the forum as I am not a fan of East Enders or don’t care whether it is snowing in England or elsewhere at the moment. (Yahoo got pretty accurate weather forecast).

So I find your quiz questions (AND lectures and historic walks!) very interesting and only wish that I could visit TRNC more often. (No happy retirement for me yet).

Once again HARTELIJK DANK!

Tot ziens

Yours sincerely,

Clarissa

RE msg 6, Clarissa2: You can use your ticket any time you wish - provided there is a lecture planned of course. With your permission I'll add your email address to the (free) MCF mailing list, so you will be informed about all forthcoming eventss (walks, talks etc). OK?

RE msg 7, darrener2: Thank you! It's from the medieval French word crénel, which became la crénelation in modern French and crenellations in English.
