I turned up at Girne Hospital to give blood this morning, but, due to having very thin veins, they were not able to get blood from this sloan. The gentleman in the BRS told me that if you are not a blood donor and you go in for an operation in North Cyprus, you have to find your own blood. I hope there are some generous A +s out there who, in the unfortunate event of my 'taking poorly', would stand me a pint .... of blood that is!

That sounds a bit tough! What about all the old people who are not allowed to give blood, or ones like me that have had cancer and cant? What happens if we need blood! Sloan - Im A+ you can have some of mine even if no one else wants it if its an emergency- i promise! When young in East Africa used to give direct transfusions - me on one side of a screen and person who needed it the other side - fun fun!!!

And me! We A+ seem to be 'as common as muck' so, Sloan you won't go short. Maybe I should send a message through to label the unit I gave today to have your name on it. First time I have given in N.Cyprus -nothing since 1997, so it has had plenty of time to ensure I can give a drop away. Sorry I didn't see you Sloan. But I will add your tale to the write up for C.O. Of course everything went wrong for me this morning. My blood pressure is normally 120 over 60 or less, but today when Lenore took it, she said it was 160!¬ Well, Inearly blew a gasket. 160!!!!! Never! Anyway, after a while of sitting still, I was down to 140 and allowed to donate. Then having a photo taken of the needle being extracted the attendant was so keen to smile that he didn't get the cotton wool close enough fast enough and there was I like some red oil geezer! Just temporary! Then leaving the hopsital I fell over! Nothing to do with anything other than my pointed toe shoes got caught in my trouser bottoms.

I am A -ve, so its a little more difficult to find. People in the hospital take advantage of people when their relatives need blood and get some supply in but my understanding is that the blood bank will supply the necessarry blood no matter. In emergencies they apply to the army camps for urgent blood. ismet PS: I am sure I can rely on C44 if need be.

So, with a quick "Buggar" I lifted myself up, dusted myself down, put the shoe back on and fled! Talk about going in for the triple. But I shall go next time and hope I am suitable material - and I met such lovely folk - and of course there are the bonuses - one is the tea and biscuit (very British) and the second is that when the blood is tested I can be told if I have AIDS! A real bonus that! Next time I go I can say 'This one is for Sloan'.

My wife, who is AB Reg Neg, had an triple by-pass operation in Adana and I had to go round the army to get some blood. I went to 2 army camps and the police academy and then the hospital called and told me to return and there were 7 young Turkish soldiers lined up. They refused any payment and all shook my hand. Treatment in the hospital was first class.

I was told that if you ever needed blood in an emergency, they would find it for you however because blood banks are so low, you would be expected to find enough donors to replace the equivalent amount of blood you have taken from the system. I was also told that it did not necessarily have to be of the same blood type just as long as you helped replenish stocks. If you went for an operation then you had to ensure that there was sufficient blood prior to you having an op. If you donate blood either via the hospital or the BRS, then these will count towards you ever having to call off needed blood in either an emergency or an op. I do not know if all this is true or not but just in case, maybe someone in the know could confirm this because I cannot think of anything worse than suddenly finding you need an op and having the worry of finding donors. IF all this is true then what better reason to go and give blood.

A-ve (A+) blood type is top notch stuff. Can't get it from your local supermarket though - usually order mine through Harrods!
