Took the dog for an afternoon stroll and as I was admiring early irises spotted a black with fawn underbelly snake sunning itself on a nearby bank. Didn't study it too long as dog was off the lead but it didn't look at all dopey and was about 1 - 1.5 metres long.

We are very fortunate that we live in a rural area and there is no history nor reason for poisoning of dogs. We are on good terms with the local shepherd and ensure that the dog is on the lead when there are sheep and goats about. We will certainly be more careful now we know that the snakes are active again.

I understood the black ones were harmless - that it was the light coloured ones you had to worry about?

The really dangerous one is the Blunt Nosed Viper which is greyish green with distinctive chequered markings and a fat foreshortened head hence the name.
