Hint-1: (...) numerous smaller ones in different parts. It may interest you that it was unknown to medieval people that they should have boiled the water from the cisterns before drinking it. The water in the cisterns was kept from one winter to the next winter and in summertime mosquitos and other insects had free play... (...)

RE msg 5, Hatty: This is very annoying - you are right again! There is no well inside St Hilarion and there are eleven large/small cisterns (including one huge cistern). I'm really interested to know where you found the answer, Hatty?

And here are the promised pictures (of the most impressive cistern, after many centuries still very well preserved!):

Update of the scores: Hatty: 3x, No1Doyen: 2x, Clarissa2: 1x, Darrener2: 2/3 pt, Dalarokat 0,5 pt and thomarge: 1/3 pt.

Later today I'll upload the last Quiz-Question in the St Hilarion series, before my lecture this Wednesday.

Hans, given the location of the castle, are there any wells outside the castle?

=> I'll check. If you are right (and I hardly doubt it...) it only shows that I'm only almost perfect...

If no one guesses it is clearly far to difficult for us and therefore you should be deducted 2 points!

RE msg 13, hatty: (...) Hans, given the location of the castle, are there any wells outside the castle? (...)

=> Not in the near vincinity of St Hilarion. However, there used to be another cistern against the Southern curtain wall (outside St Hilarion), but it has disappeared. We know about its existence from medieval documents (very few and always from the time of a siege of the castle).

Well done Hatty. Don't give these quizes up Hans, even if its one a week. Spent quite a lot of time over the weekend looking for the answer and still got it wrong!. Keeps the brain going and learning at the same time.
