3 : Quiz question-: St Hilarion still holds many secrets and some will never be answered, because of the lack of medieval documentation. On this spot (see picture) my friend, the official St Hilarion guide Mustafa Tolgali and I are discussing and speculating about one of the secrets. Which one..?

4 : Answers before 8 pm, Monday, February 22, 2010.

Good grief DC! This is a hard one but, I think that Mustafa Tolgali is either telling you that the original inhabitants were about 1.25 m high OR you are discussing the position of the elusive 101st ? room and its' secret garden and treasure trove.

Hint-2 (because this is a very difficult question and I think even Hatty will fail this time...): we started walking/talking at nr. 24 on this cut-out of my map and walked northeast on the footpath, looked left, stopped, turned and looked west...

P.S. Can I make it easier..?

Darrener2: There is no flat ground in the Middle (or second plateau, level) Ward. Jousting (horses/spears) was done here:

OK, last try...

You are discussing whether the castle was built on the site of an earlier monastery as has been suggested.

Darrener2: I'm so very sorry... And the castle was not built ON (*) the site of an earlier monastery, but AROUND it and enlarged throughout the centuries from 1192 onwards.

Re "ON (*)": parts are still standing (second level), for example the Byzantine church and neighbouring buildings and rooms.

Blimey DC. You are even more pedantic than I. lol

When I said 'on the site' of course I meant on and around the site, as I am sure that in addition to the buildings you described still remaining, there will have been others which are no longer there, having been destroyed and the sites built upon in later years.

Good quizzes. They will make me look at the place in a whole new light the next time I climb to the top.

Thank you.

OK, 8 pm, the end of the St Hilarion Quiz-Questions! I owe you the right answer!

Look at this map: http://www.allcrusades.com/BB_pics/1_first_plateau.jpg and find nr. 24 in a circle. Here you will see these cemented stones ( http://www.allcrusades.com/BB_pics/S5001088.JPG ), definitely suggesting and even indicating the last part of a wall. And a wall of this type suggests buildings/rooms. The problem is that digging on this spot in St Hilarion is not allowed (of course not, I hasten to say!) and Mustafa and I have not found other traces of building. We've spend there quite some time several times, but until now - nothing. And that's what we were talking about again!

So here are the final scores: Hatty: 3 2/3x, No1Doyen: 2x, Clarissa2: 1x, Darrener2: 2/3 pt, Dalarokat 0,5 pt and thomarge: 1/3 pt. Well done all!

P.S. Interested in another series of Quiz-Questions? Which medieval subject do you prefer? Or shall I chose? Let me know!

Bill, that's where my interest in the Crusade movement started - decades ago. Too late I realised that I would not live long enough to see it all or know it all. So when I saw the light I decided to know as much as possible about Cyprus and the Crusades. Difficult enough and still too much for a man's lifetime!
