Whilst doing some re-painting on internal walls, I am finding that the original paint starts to peel and curl back, exposing the plaster.

Does anyone know why this is happening and how it can be prevented.

(For the smart ones out there "I do want to continue painting" so stopping is not an option)

If you can see a yellowing on the render and a white fluffy deposit then it could be the dreaded and ever popular Cyprus damp, generally appears about a foot above the floor and stretches out horizontally ,many thoughts on cures on here , i have just cut the plaster back and allow to breathe and let the salts in the concrete leech out , did mine 18 months ago and still exposed , also ventilate the property where poss ,regds.

Cassius,

You need to scrape back all the loose and flakey material to a tight edge and then feather off with sandpaper. Then face fill the offending areas, and apply a coat of primer sealer before you put the finished coat on.It sounds to me like the plaster has not been allowed to dry sufficiently before it was first coated.Hence the effervesence. It really is a pain in the arse of a job,but if you dont do it it will come back again,

Paul.

Thank's to you all for your responses. I am sorry I couldn't respond earlier but I was trying to get the paint to stick properly.

I have tried a brush and feathering the old paintwork but to no avail. There is no sign of effevesence , so that is not part of the problem.

It isn't the whole wall YET but when I paint over what seems to be firm and secure paint it just bubbles up and lifts. So then I have to wait till it dries rub it back and refill to level......Re-paint some more and watch as it lifts somewhere else.

I haven't tried Trimetal but I have tried Jotsun equivelent. Again to no avail....

I think I'll just get the house rebuilt........

Love Cyprus though. But hair is getting thinner.

Cassius we had this prob in parents house and its not good news. Its the plaster thats the problem, dad had to buy a special external paint with silicone in it, but it worked. Hope this helps!

Cassius,

How old is the plaster. It could be that there is destemper coming through in which case you will have no alternative but to completeley scrape all of it and completeley seal it before you can do anything,
