Hi there

Does anyone know why I cannot make local calls from a UK mobile whilst in Cyprus? My phone switches to Turkcell network, but when I try to make a local call in Cyprus it won't let me.

Thanks

You will still need to dial the whole number including country code as if you were ringing from the UK

eg. 0090 555 6666

Do you put 0090 before your number and leave the first 0 off the no, the problem is the call goes through the UK before reaching Cyprus, I think and expensive.

Thanks for all your replies. I have probably not put the full number as if ringing from the UK. I do have a mobile I use in Cyprus which I bought in Cyprus (pay as you go), but unfortunately because I cannot get to Cyprus as much as I wiould like everytime I go my phone has been 'deactivated' and I end up buying a new sim. The UK mobile does sound expensive, but just thought for emergencies, its handy to be able to make a local call if I had to.

Thanks once again

i cant understand why your sim would be deactivated , we have turkish sims for our phones ,and internet ,and they have always worked when we come back , call them up and ask why its not working , much cheaper than using your uk phone and you can still call, recieve on it ?

Hi Rowlo

I got told its because if you do not make a phone call within a 3 month period, for security reasons your sim is deactivated - and they cannot reactivate - you have to buy a new sim. When we went to Cyprus 4 times per year, it was OK, but now we are only managing to get there twice a year we always have the same problem with the phone. We have tried both Turkcell and Telsim pay as you go and it seems to be the same for both?

Rowlo

Tried to use sim card after 3 months and didnt work. When getting another one was told much the same as Vic.I dont know why its deactivated ,cant see what security problem kicks in after not using for 3 months, that wouldnt occur after say 3 weeks.

Out of interest ,anybody know the reason.

We just go in to Lemars and top up and the credit we had left from before is also added.

I think you can get away with a top up up to about 6 months but we have had to buy a new sim aftewr 8 months. Not a problem though as cheap enough and you ge ta bit of credit with it as well. Not sure whether it works but have been told that if you leave the phone plugged in on charge and text or call every so often then it keeps it active. I might try it, use a timer and charge say once a week for a few hours.

Simple tip:

If using a mobile in the UK and abroad store ALL your numbers on the PHONE or phone's memory card .... not the SIM

Back up your contacts regularly !

Then sore all numbers like this:

UK +44 207 321 6543

UK mob +44 7887 987 9872

TR +90 352 xxxxxxx

TR mob +90 533 xxxx etc

RoC +357 25

Then, wherever you are you can dial automatically and you ARE charged at local rates if you are in that country and using a local sim..

If you swap sims all your contacts are still there.

If you REALLY need to use the UK sim, get close to the 'south' and allow your phone to roam to MTM or Cyna.. The rates are capped by the EU to allow 'cheaper' roaming.

If you are living in North of Famagusta / Bogaz(i) area and can get a signal from Protaras Cyta / MTM mast, get a pre-pay sim from them as calls to the UK on a mobile are approx 5p / minute !!
