snails up the wall and windows

Why do snails climb up walls and what do they achive when they get to the top, is it because of the heavy rains that we are having and they are afraid of drowning, we have several snails climbing up the walls and windows of our property lead by dad then mum followed by baby who are spaced about 18ins apart.

yeah ı think, they normally appear after rains , it must be a way that they protect their selves.

They don't like getting cold toes... you dip your feet in the rain and see it you think it's warm enough!

It is a normal phenomena here in Cyprus in the winter & spring. However what I do not understand is why they don't come down again? Some seem to stay stuck to the wall & die. Where I've been able to reach them & pulled them off, the end result is some missing paint from the wall. The snails are definitely dead on removal.
