In January the GCs were accused of diverting flood water to Güzelyurt. I wonder what it is like there now?

Does anybody know anything about the situation in Girne? I have to go after work from the Colony area to the Astro supermarket direction. I don't know if to go through the centre or the road above...

We were heading to lefkosia this morning and it took an hour to get to Girne - we gave up and returned home. Flooding everywhere. police, JCB's, fire trucks all over the place.

I'm living in Gonyeli, the effects of the Dame has just reached us, watched the river at the end of our road that has never had water in it in the 10 years I have lived here go from nothing to a raging river in 10 mins water rising as i speak about metre every 5 mins. house at the end of road has just had the water go over the garden wall and in to the house, old couple living here has just been evacuated. This is not a joke, just glad I'm living on the second floor. Husband stuck in Girne looking for somewhere to sleep tonight I think as all roads home have been closed.

Do you think that was the case? The Turkish Cypriot press went there and reported from the scene, saying local people had been told to blame the GCs and accusing the TRNC of not building flood defences to protect its own people!

Well I am not sure whether we blame ~Allah, Jehovah or the Christian God for all this, but Someone is chucking it down on the 'righteous and the unrighteous'. I felt sorry for myself this morning as the kitchen floooded, but having heard of the awful stories of what other people have suffered, I now feel guilty. Just because I was paddling in freezing water with a saucepan to try to clear some of the water, and with no one to help my 80 year old 'man' and me, and with no electric, I thought 'Why me?' But now I see it is everyone, so don't anybody DARE moan in the summer about lack of water.

And yes, there is a huge piece of concrete across the road at Incescu, but I am told it is now cleared. Won't test that one until tomorrow - if I go out.

I just hope in the places worst hit there is some kind of community spirit, cos there ain't one up here! I really miss that from all the places I have lived, but just regard life here as another part of a learning curve. Blessings all.

Oleander, I read it in a newspaper and I was concerned that if they were having problems then perhaps now it would be even worse. My opinion is irrelevant and under the circumstances the cause is too.

Just sat and watched the area in Lefkosa where my mother in law lives and they are waist deep in water, looks like Lefkosa has been worst hit but with the rain still falling god only knows what will happen or how many will lose their homes tonight.

maybe now all those greedy stupid builders and planning officers, now know why ,nature has carved natural ravines in the landscape to direct water to the sea. it might not rain for another 5 years , but when the rains come again , please stop all building and dumping in ravines.

the goverment should be sued for letting this happen

Liz they are not prepared for this kind of weather, feel like i just want to go and get her but no way of getting through. The main hospital is in chaos, no electric, generators are all located on the ground floors so not much use, they have moved patients from the lower floors up but no beds to put them in.

All the emergency services are working flat out and kibtek are doing their best to keep the electric on but they just said on tv that some areas are being cut off for safety reasons.

Dutch just posted a blanket appeal, thought that would be a start, worst areas in Lefkosa are taskinkoy, gocmenkoy, gonyeli, the hospital area but there are also very bad hit areas like hamitkoy on the lefoksa ercan road. Mother in law is in Taskinkoy and she is now moving upstairs and kibtek are turning power off for safety reasons.

It is a bit early to find out exactly what is needed but will make some calls tomorrow but blankets will be needed urgently so please help if you can.

A big FF for the TRNC government and many municipalities' mayors. The Karaoglanoglu muhtar was asking for an interview with the Girne mayor for years, to talk about this issue. Now it's too late. He (the muhtar) said that the mayor is wasting the money in things that are not important. Not to mention the corruption at Girne municipality. They could make a lot of things to prevent this, but they are only thinking about their money. Sad to say, the Turkish-Cypriots are drowning in their our ignorance.

=> Hmm. A couple of weeks ago I walked into the Girne townhall, told the Mayors secretary that I would like to see the Mayor and could walk straight into his room to discuss my issue. And a TC muhtar needs years - without success..?

Hans, this is what the K'oglu muhtar said few hours ago on BRT :-?

Sorry for my comment, I'm just angry with the way TRNC politicians "use" the money. They could prevent (at least in part) these disasters, but they prefer to send the money to their own pockets. And the worst is that everybody knows it and nobody reacts.

Anyway, let's hope that they take measures for next years (if this is caused by the global warming, then in the future could be still worse).

People in the UK criticise their government and politicians all the time. So does the media. In the UK they are not afraid to do so. And not disallowed from doing so on UK websites either.

No doubt that come June they'll be saying there's a water shortage and the local Belediyse will be rationing to a few hours a week the amount of water you can have!
