The cricket mad Pakistani staff at the Punjab Indian restaurant in Lapta is challenging all expats to a Pakistan v Expats Grand Cricket Match in May at a date and venue to be confirmed if there is enough interest shown. Brian, our Cyprus Star reporter, called into the popular Indian restaurant last weekend to collect a takeaway meal and whilst waiting its arrival was discussing the merits of the current Twenty20 Series taking place between Pakistan and England with waiter Hussain, when the idea of a cricket match was mooted. Brian agreed to advertise the event in the paper and on a popular website forum to see if there was enough interest within the expat community to field a full team. After throwing down the gauntlet Hussain then stated that he already had enough players to field a full Pakistani side whenever a game could be arranged. If anyone is interested in playing, coaching or just helping out an expat team then please contact Brian on: 0533 841 1882 or by email at: bria

or by email at: brian@starint.net or Hussain on: 0533 865 5846. Meanwhile if anyone can recommend a suitable venue which could be made available then again please contact Brian who commented “This could turn out to be a real fun event which should draw a good crowd for an afternoon of camaraderie and sport. CreditWest, where Hussain also works, have already agreed to sponsor the event and no doubt Riaz at the Punjab will organise the catering, but other sponsors would be more than welcome, particularly for prizes.”

Cricket has been played at the Sports Ground near Mare Monte Lapta, where the Pumas play at times.

Brian, I used to be a baseball pitcher in Holland (ABC, Amsterdam Baseball Club) when I was around 18. Is cricket very different..?

@msg 7

wow, someone else who played baseball... and a European no less. I'm both highly confused and pleased. Forget cricket, let's get that game going.

RE msg 8, mahdel: (Brian, I don't want to hijack the thread, just a short note...) Holland usually plays Italy for the European title and usually wins. Several Dutchmen played Major League ball. I founded the first baseball club in Czechoslovakia (1968), imported there some old equipment from Holland and we played the American Embassy team, with some Russian spectators. On August 7, 1968, I had to flee the country when the Warsaw Pact countries "liberated" their Czechoslovakian "friends". OK, next post, about cricket again.

Ah! the thwack of leather on willow, the cucumber sandwiches and the ladies in pretty dresses.

Now that would be just a perfect a summer.

The Hippo can throw down a mean yorker from time to time and waft a little he can to.

What is it with Hans (DC) and his clubs with only then first three letters of the alphabet.

He had the ABC, see above, he had the ACC (Alsancak Chess Club), then he added another letter/game and now it is known as ABCC (Alsancak Backgammon & Chess Club).

I heard someone wanted to incorporate Scrabble, but it had the wrong letter!

Just a harmless joke as I believe he has something to do with MCF.

Well this is very encouraging. I will now start taking names of potential players and support staff and investigate the use of Alsancak stadium, or the practice pitch next to it. Be warned though that the opposition are taking this very seriuosly and we may have to upgrade our alert state to 'Fair Vexed' in order to produce an inspired victory!

Of couirse the game would be open to spectators and well wishers.

Thanks for your support, more info to follow in due course.

May unfortunately will not be convenient for Slogger Hippo, but maybe later in the year.

Sorry about the Pimms Gordon, but in Northern Cricket it was beer I am afraid.

For Kevin Hosford - I received your email but my reply will not send so I am just confirming that your name is now on the list of players.

Riaz mooted this idea a few years ago so the first thing I packed when I moved here was the "coffin" full of all the bits and pieces. Count me in any way you like. Aged wicket keeper but with a fine belly to take the edges in the folds of EFFES.

RE msg 13, Texas: Believe it or not: I played cricket for a whole season also! Yes, in ACC (Amsterdam Cricket Club) with ABC (Amsterdam Baseball Club) daughters of AFC (Amsterdam Football Club, one of the oldest football clubs in the Netherlands).

P.S. Good luck, Brian. Good idea and I'll be there to watch how you Brits are doing...

Sounds like a lot of fun, trying to uphold England's honour. We may do a little better than our National Side and actually win!

I am over in May for a month.

I'm a fully qualified umpire by the ECB. Would be happy to officiate.
