Wenrtover the mountains just before Tatlisu yesterday around 1215, 3 areas had rocks and stones across the road, past a police car coming the other way. When i returned 2 hours later all rocks stones and a little mud had been cleared off to the roadside. The police must have got a JCB to clear the falls.

The Greatstone houses in Malatya are virtually inaccesible as the road has disappeared. Also a big wall and patio down in Incesu. Walls down all over the place in Alsancak and Lapta and mudslides commonplace. The Belediesi are doing a stalwart job clearing the roads and should be congratulated. They were even out at the height of the storm ensuring that roads were passable.

Alsancak Belediyesi are currently filling in a huge hole at the side of the road overlooking the ravine just outside Incesu on the way to Malatya.

Had a look at the greatstone road last week. The tarmac section was starting to heave and had a big crack in it. Is it the rough secion that has gone?

I believe the tarmac road has collapsed and the electric sub station with it. I also believe that the road has been cleared but has fallen away next to the ravine and is therefore impassable.

I would be grateful if anyone has any news re repairs.

Incesu/Greatstone. We have just come back from there. The road is out past the German house on the corner, the big wall against the hill has collapsed all the way. Further along the road itself has collapsed and even when stones etc moved would not be wide enough for a car unless they dig out the side of the hill. the tarmac area has had a crack/slump since last summer so no different there, but further up it has now also slumped and the car gate onto the road is now impassable. I gather from local that Beledysi know and will do something in a day or two as there is no one living there at present.

Pretty hairy up here, some of the walls on our development have collapsed, the lad at the side has cracked and broken away, now somewhere the Green Hill restaurant. The old road from Arapkoy is fast becoming a half lane road !!

We're luckier than most because we are so high up and most of the problems occured lower down nearer sea level. There was a waterfall going right over the road above Arapkoy and down into Amaranta, shame my pics didn't come out, water on the lens i think !!!!

Much of this nightmare could have been avoided if:

A) Builders didn't block the ravines with rubbish and

B) The roadside aquaducts were left open and unblocked and

C) Building was prohibited in watercourses. (obvious, but look at it!) and

D) Building and road construction was prohibited on potentially unstable land and

E) Retaining walls were built to age old accepted and international standards.

The planners only need to ask an engineering geologist or structural engineer. But do they ..........?

Admittedly these were exceptional conditions but we only have ourselves to blame. Let's make it not happen again?

Excellent posting by Jetski, but are there any "Planners" here, and if so, what do they plan? Perhaps the Government should offer Jetski a Consultancy position!

My neighbour 'Rosie' s owner has some fab photos of the path through the ravine at Malatya which is now a huge hole! I would post them but I don't know how, maybe Rosie's owner can.

The force of nature is not to be played with. The Greatstone houses at Malatya should NEVER have been built for any kinds of reasons, and other houses built out of greed now have collapsed walls, and so the ecology is damaged, economy is damaged and for why??? Shame, innit"! And sadly, it always seems the innocent who suffer because of the greedy!

MarieB,

For what ever reason they were built, think of the owners of these houses who brought in good faith, "But for the grace of god go I" I allmost brought a house there but changed my mind and decided to buy somwhere else

I agree Rogerdodger. Nice people have been conned once again, but the biggest 'con' comes from the Government allowing them to be built. They even widened the road for access, but it was still only a bit of a dirty track. Bad planning. And unfortunately here, it is so often a case of 'There but for the grace of God' cos we are all such nice folk and trusting.

I think there are only about 2 or 3 permanent residents up there with the rest being bought for that get away from it all holiday.

Incidentlaly, the rains seem to have washed away the phone line,s but I can't find out who else is affected because I no speaka turkish. So all the services are overstretched, but I agree with an earlier posting the Belediye has done a grand job at working against all odds to try to get stuff cleared. Not a nice job at all.
