the alternative is dont use anything! I have my toast slathered in marmite only, I dont use butter or marge on anything, I think it ruins a jacket spud, I hate it when I order one and they forget and put butter in it, yuk x

RE msg 18, andrew4232: I must strongly protest on behalf of the Dutch farmers! Holland produces the finest unsalted, medium salted and (mainly for export) salted butter (boter) - seven varieties in total. Click the seven packages in this graphic: http://www.zuivelonline.nl/?pageID=169

Sorry Hans, but I lived in The Netherlands for 10 years and couldn't find a decent salted butter so always used to bring back English butter with me on my trips to the UK. I can honestly say though, I really miss boterkoek, I'd give anything to have a slice right now lol Carollynne

Re: Msgs 12, 21, 23 Please, please people, about English butter being the best!!! From all the butters I've tried it is absolutely the worst! And Lupak being the worst of all, especially spreadable which ( to quote Lilli) is definitely "derived from plastic" and so packed with salt that it is revolting! ( apart from being a health hazard - think about high blood pressure and strokes!) The best butters are from Alpine regions : Bavarian, French, Italian and they don't have preservatives, smell of alpine flowers, creamy and are simply divine. Please, don't mention that poison again. I have to pay in UK 3 times the price to buy French unsalted semi-decent one!

In Astro (Girne), about two years ago we used to buy the Australian 'Bega' butter - that was 'honest', delicious butter. I'm afraid, since all the bovine diseases so frequently rampaging through UK - obviously due to inadequate animal husbandry, I will not buy English or Irish butter. I buy some Turkish brands (although 'Pinar' has tasted disgusting lately), or Austrian or Danish. Oh for some pure, clean, delicious New Zealand butter, milk and cream - and, for that matter, to be able to buy NZ lamb cuts!

C2 what makes you think Lurpak in English? It's Danish and always has been. The best on Earth bar none is Buerre D'Isigny from France in the terracotta pots. It's so good you could eat it plain! Sainsbury's used to sell it... not sure if they still do.

Talking of of French butter; the best butter I ever tasted was a local variety in Chablis - oh, and their wines - 'Nectar of the Gods'!

Beurre d'Isigny is an AOP butter produced in the Veys Bay area and the valleys of the rivers running into it, i.e. 193 communes straddling the Manche and Calvados départments.

C2, it was meant to read 'think Lurpak is English' You said "Please, please people, about English butter being the best!!! From all the butters I've tried it is absolutely the worst! And Lupak being the worst of all" So if English butter is the worst, how can Lurpak be the worst of all if it's not English? Lurpak isn't English, as you know...

msg33, what a load of old b-----ks you talk. Bovine deseases frequently in GB. Inadequate animal husbandary! Pure clean deliciuos NZ butter.... yes right, ....... NZ animal husbandary is appalling compaired with GB! they cut off the cows tails, that they need to switch off the flies, they do this with a knife and no anaesthetic! they bash the baby bull calves on the head to kill them as they dont want to rear them, they abort their cows because they want them to all calve at the same time.. yea they are sooooo pure and clean, I would not even think of buying any NZ dairy product. I can tell you more if you want, as my nephew is working on a farm in NZ and they are all far below our GB standards in milk, sheep, beef... So dont knock something that has by far higher standards than NZ...,

Re: Msg 41, Groucho, I am not talking about Danish ownership of Lurpak brand. I am talking about Lurpak butter which is produced in milk processing plants in UK. And about its taste. And I am very pleased that you appreciate French butter. And no, I have not seen beurre d'Isygny in Sainsbury's.
