In this quiz the first and only price is again a drink at Guido's Bistro in Alsancak (and he doesn't sponsor this quiz, so I have to make difficult questions or I'll go bankrupt...).

The question: "Were there any Roman Catholics in Cyprus before the arrival of King Richard I Plantagenêt (the Lionheart) in 1191 - and if so give the contemporary names of three villages/towns where they lived...".

Answers before Tuesday, March 2, 8 pm...

Good luck! (Do I really mean this..?!)...

Probably - but I remember you said the Ottoman's drove them out and allowed the Greek Orthodox

church back!

Can you tell me about St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church (I know where it is) as I am bringing an R.C friend

over on 16th and thought I would include that in her itinerary!

Tuesday, March 2, 8 pm [end of QUIZ-02]

Roman Catholics: there were Christians (early Christianity) in Cyprus in the beginning and later (after the Great Schism) they became members of the Eastern Orthodox Church - they were not Roman Catholics. So when Richard I the Lionheart arrived on the shores of Cyprus there were believers in Christ, but Roman Catholics could only be found in some towns - they were mainly merchants from the town-states in what is now called Italy (Venice, Genoa, Pisa and less important towns). Examples of towns in Cyprus with some Roman Catholics: Paphos, Lemesis (Limassol), Amathus, Famagusta.

So, I'm very sorry: there is no winner in QUIZ-02!

P.S. Over to you, Bill...

Oh dear, only just seen this, and as the theologian I should have won this hands down, shouldn't I. But I have just seen it. In any case, I don't booze! It would have cost you a coffee Hans!

As to The RC church in Kyrenia, I would suggest that you google to find out the story of St.Hilary . I did preach a sermon on her at St.Andrews a few years, back, but you can google and get a lot of info about this lovely young, generous hearted lady. Or attend the church for mass at noon every Sunday. Used to be a lot less. The priests who come over are actually Franciscan Friars from Paphos Gate (Nicosia) in the south, and you might get an Italian or whomsoever comes over. I used to be great mates with an American Friar, and there was a Polish one, and I spent many happy hours in the Friary playing backgammon (that's where I learned, Hans!!!!)

It is only fairly recently that it went back to its original name of St.Hilary etc, etc.

So, today I guess I have lost out on everything.

RE msg 22, MarieB; (...) The priests who come over are actually Franciscan Friars from Paphos Gate (Nicosia) in the south, (...)

=> Interesting, Marion! If we talk about this church: http://www.allcrusades.com/CASTLES/CYPRUS/NICOSIA/PHOTOBOOK/holy_cross_catholic_church/index.html (I still have to write some text about this church with its very interesting collection of medieval remains!).

We may have met there, although we didn't know each other then and although I went there for very different reasons... By the way, did you notice that on many maps of the walled city of Nicosia this church is located in the Northern part of Nicosia? Someone, one day, made an error drawing the "Green Line" and it has been imitated many times since. So one day, when I first went there, I had difficulties to find the entrance of this RC church, because I was looking in the Northern part...

Here's the exact location (cut out) http://www.allcrusades.com/BB_pics/rc_church_nic_south.jpg
