I'm putting this on for a very kind lady I met at Petlife last week. She had a beautiful pointer bitch in being spayed. It turns out she was a stray and the couple were keeping her on their land and feeding her etc. She really is a beautiful dog, white with brown head and lots of spots on her body. Really friendly and obedient and is obviously used to be being around people as she LOVES cuddles and has had her tail docked. We really cannot take her as we have 2 dogs with possiby a 3rd on the way as a little stray has attached herself to us and it breaks my heart to think that she will have to be let loose back into the wild once her stitches come out today as the couple's landlord is complaining about the dogs being there. PLEASE if you think you can give this wonderful girl a home call Sibel at Petlife on 05338687670 or she will have to be let loose this evening. It really is breaking my heart that we can't give her a home as she really is wonderful

Heartbreaking though it is, it really is not fair for anyone to take in a stray - have it spayed, giving it food, warmth and hope - then let it loose. Surely there are enough people on the Island (I'm not there at the moment) who could get a petition signed at some central point - to then present to the Government about a regular round-up of stray and feral animals who are then euthanased out of sight, and the bodies cremated - plus a register of animal owners, with insistence on their being chipped, and as they leave the Island, written proof they have either taken the animal with them, contactable proof of whomever has taken the animal on, or written proof the animal has been euthanased. These strays are breaking peoples hearts - and have such miserable lives living on emotional roller coasters and their wits.

MsGarnet I couldn't agree more but this couple did take her in in good faith as she turned up on their doorstep! At least she won't be responsible for more puppies roaming the streets. I do think dogs should be chipped by law, at least that way their owners can be tracked and fined if the dog is found straying. Many of the feral dogs are carrying disease or are wounded or maimed, surely vets can put these to sleep without the government knowing any figures - do the government really care and do they even check????? I doubt it. Sadly it seems some of the worst offenders for strays (other than the seasonal hunters) are Brits. The little stray we're trying to gain the confidence of has obviously come from a home and understands english. I can assure you she will be given a good home, proper veterinary care and NEVER abandonded BUT that is our limit on dogs so we can give all of them the proper care and attention they deserve. Don't be too hard on this couple, they're kind & meant well

I don't mean to be hard - I have a heart and am glad I'm off the Island for a while, because I KNOW my heart would be broken seeing all the bedraggled, ill, defenceless, starving, injured, diseased animals - which is why I wish the indigenous population or Government would take control and do something about it - the least said but more action taken by them, the better all round. It is a sad - never ending, miserable tale......

We MAY have some good news about Molly! Sibel has hopefully found her a new home so we're keeping everything crossed. Sorry MsGarnet, I really wasn't implying you're not as upset as everyone else about animal treatment here, I was just saying that this couple do get so involved. I suppose one good thing that comes out of these people taking animals in is that they always get them doctored so it does help in a small way to cut down the population. I really do wish the government would do something to make some people take more responsibility for their pets. We have idiots here on our estate who insist certain cats are "their" pets yet never de-worm them, de-flea them or have them neutered, it's ignorant idiots like them who should be made aware of responsibility. Sadly beer money comes before pet care! You never know if we all nag enough something good may come out of a very sad situation! I'll let you know how Molly gets on but please keep offers coming if you can help
