Hi

The event is to raise funds for the Society for the Protection of Turtles ( a registered charity). Every year students come out from the UK to monitor and protect the green and loggerhead turtles that nest in the TRNC - there are around 80 beaches that they may nest on. The project is in it's 16th year but it will be another 14 years before they will start to see returns on their efforts. That's because it takes approx. 30 years for a turtle to mature and to return to the area that it was born in to breed and lay eggs. The turtles start to arrive in late May and by visiting the goat shed at Alagadi (where some of the students are based) you can make a booking to (try to) see the turtles nesting on that beach. The students will take you on to the beach in the evening and then they will patrol the beach every 15 minutes or so, if they see any activity they will escort you to observe it. Obviously, there are no guarantees that a turtle will turn up! Full details can be obtained from the goatshed at Alagadi and you can only make the bookings there, be warned that numbers are limited so book early to avoid disappointment. Later on in the season, late July to September, the students will do public releasing of baby turtles into the sea around 5.30pm and you can phone Tricia Dann on 0533 846 9563 to find out if there is a hatching on the day.

To get to the goatshed from Girne, take the coast road East to Catalkoy, Arapkoy, Buffavento. Take the left turn to Esentepe/Tatlisu and continue past the Acapulco Hotel and further along pass the Power Station. Take the next turning left signposted Alagadi - there is a sign saying Turtle Project. Follow the road down and when it forks, take the left fork passing St. Kathaleen's restaurant on your right hand side. Take the track to the right hand side after you have past the last house on that road and the goatshed is at the top on the left hand side.

There are stalls at Carpenter's restaurant every Friday and Chateau Lambousa every Saturday which sell goods to raise funds and also provide information.
