After reading the post about fitted carpets, I was thinking of the ways a home in Cyprus needs to be different to one in the UK, and the things I would change if I could go back in time e.g. Small windows are better than big - they let in too much heat in the summer, too much cold in the winter. Bedrooms - small is good, cheaper to keep cool in the summer and warm in the winter . Inside space - spend a lot more time out of doors, so need more shady terace areas rather than large inside rooms.

Mark I'm not trying to make my Cyprus home like my British home. I have an old place with noisey floorboards upstairs and thought that carpets would be the best idea to dampen the sound. Really wish I hadn't asked now.

There is nothing worse than getting up to go to work at 6am in the winter and having to put your feet on a cold stone floor. Brrrrrrr!!!!!! I love my carpets!! If I could afford to have fitted carpet in my bedroom, I would.

Re:Msg 8, Please alleviate me from my ignorance! What is wrong with a nice thick rug next to your bed to put your feet on if you have stone floor? Why it has to be FITTED carpet? To collect dust , breed dust mites etc. ? And why, please, why do I still see fitted carpets in cloakrooms and bathrooms in the UK! Very hygienic!!!

Sorry - just picked up on this. Did you mean living full-time in Cyprus or just having a holiday home? I would imagine there are vast differences - i.e. I have a holiday home and I fight the dust on a daily basis (actually, not as much as I used to - you get sort of acclimatised to it) and I just live with it. However, I do like my washing machine, air con, etc.etc. I think if I lived there permanently, I would like to have some sort of heating. Unlike some, I rather enjoy my home comforts and, in particular, I would like to be warm in the winter months (I know how cold it can get). Still, I suppose it's each to their own - it would be a funny old world if we were all the same (God forbid). Jeannie

Mess 9 There are just as many mites in your pillow and mattress, chomping away at your dead hair and skin and each one dropping their poo up to 20 times a day for you to breath in while you are sleeping and I bet you have those in your house.

Re: Msg 12, My mattress , pillows , duvet and mattress protector are all hypoallergenic and have an anti-dust mites treatment. And what is more important - all my bedding is washed, dried, aired and vacuumed very regularly. Whilst fitted carpets... - well , they stay fitted with all these "nice things" accumulated for years. And fondness for fitted carpets was named as No 1 reason for the highest rate of asthma sufferers in the UK as compared to other developed countries.
