Dear DC, One can find this Venetian coat of arms on one of the buildings (currently private) which formely had formed the Archbishop's Palace in Lefcosa. Similar one is on the Venetian column in front of Konak.

How do we know this shield is even in Cyprus? We need more proof not just a photograph. There are lots of good architectural plasterers around the world.

Got it; It was the combined efforts of the North Eastern Italian sinking City of Venice in cahoots with the submerging western sea frontal towns of Holland that they formed a rugby team producing the engraved emblem! God knows what happened to the dyke's! Richard

Archbishop's Palace Lefkosa I think it could be the shield/arms of Niccolo Dandolo who was the Governer of Nicosia. He was killed in 1570 by the forces of Lala Mustafa Pasha, and his head was sent in a basket to Marco Antonio Bragadino who was the Venetian Commander of Famagusta.

I'll ask Izzet for the status of Quiz-moderator, so I can stop all this nonsense... P.S. Five more hours till it's 8 pm locally. No winner yet... I''m off to Jessic's to find some Dutch courage... |

This shield is on the north side of St Sophia Cathedral in Nicosia - the Archbishops palace. Its an elegant marble panel in early Italian Renaissance styple (Venetian) showing a shield beneath an mitre, surrounded by honeysuckle with a gryphon rampant!

It is on the first floor wall of the buildings formerly the Archbishop's house, but now in private hands, in Lefkosa. Apart from describing the sheild in heraldic terms I cannot think what else to say. Except that maybe there might be a link with Perugia in Italy. (The gryphon rampant.)

RE msg 33, Darrener2: (...) Don't I get a point for it's location? You did say I was correct. (...) => No, I did NOT say you were correct. In my msg 30 I said: "Right - but the rest of your post is wrong". This was the question: "I want TWO answers: 1: Where can we find this shield (Venetian)? and 2: What do you know about it?" P.S. Do you happen to be related to Bill..?

RE msg 45, Darrener2: (...) In which case, I could still be right about Niccolo Dandolo ;-) ;-) ;-) (...) => Highly unlikely/definitely not. Nicolo or Niccolò Dandolo was the Venetian military commander of Nicosia when the Ottoman Turks attacked the city in 1570. There is no reason to believe he ever inhabited the Archbishop's palace or had the right to place his arms in the wall for one reason or another. He is believed to have lived in the area near the Venetian Column in Nicosia.
