Everybody noticed that the first series of Quizzes (prizes: free seats at one of my lectures) was ended and a new series had started. Everybody - except Bill. OK, here you are: http://www.allcrusades.com/BB_pics/score_Bill.jpg

Is it something to do with the coat of arms of the bishop?

No, Bill. I know that religion is not your forte, but even you should know that a bishop is not an archbishop (my message 6).

Dear DC,

One can find this Venetian coat of arms on one of the buildings (currently private) which formely had formed the Archbishop's Palace in Lefcosa.

Similar one is on the Venetian column in front of Konak.

How do we know this shield is even in Cyprus? We need more proof not just a photograph. There are lots of good architectural plasterers around the world.

Got it; It was the combined efforts of the North Eastern Italian sinking City of Venice in cahoots with the submerging western sea frontal towns of Holland that they formed a rugby team producing the engraved emblem! God knows what happened to the dyke's!

Archbishop's Palace Lefkosa

I think it could be the shield/arms of Niccolo Dandolo who was the Governer of Nicosia. He was killed in 1570 by the forces of Lala Mustafa Pasha, and his head was sent in a basket to Marco Antonio Bragadino who was the Venetian Commander of Famagusta.

Omg, I have to read every post! And I only see a lack of knowledge... And a derailed form of the dreaded British sense of humour... I'll ask Izzet for the status of Quiz-moderator, so I can stop all this nonsense...

P.S. Five more hours till it's 8 pm locally. No winner yet... I''m off to Jessic's to find some Dutch courage...

This shield is on the north side of St Sophia Cathedral in Nicosia - the Archbishops palace. Its an elegant marble panel in early Italian Renaissance styple (Venetian) showing a shield beneath an mitre, surrounded by honeysuckle with a gryphon rampant!

RE msg 10, Clarissa2: (...) Similar one is on the Venetian column in front of Konak. (...)

=> Sorry, Clarissa2! You confused two shields. The right answer is in the link I'll provide below.

RE msg 16, Darrener2: (...) Archbishop's Palace Lefkosa (...)

=> Right - but the rest of your post is wrong...

RE msg 24, No1Doyen: (...) It's not the Archbishop's Palace Lefkosa. (...)

=> It seems that Bill is the only participant who does NOT know where to find the shield...

RE msg 28, mamachina: (...) This shield is etc (...)

=> Right! 1 pt for you!

In this link you'll find the complete "where & what" answer (it's about number 4): http://www.allcrusades.com/CASTLES/CYPRUS/NICOSIA/TEXT/archbishops_palace/archbishops_palace_txt_1.html

More here: http://www.allcrusades.com/CASTLES/CYPRUS/NICOSIA/TEXT/archbishops_palace/archbishops_palace_txt_2.html

The score in this new series of Quizzes: Darrener2: 1,5 pt. Japeal: 1 pt. Mamachina: 1 pt. Ianwfs: 0.5 pt. Hatty: 1/4 pt, Bill: 1/4 pt.

It is on the first floor wall of the buildings formerly the Archbishop's house, but now in private hands, in Lefkosa.

Apart from describing the sheild in heraldic terms I cannot think what else to say. Except that maybe there might be a link with Perugia in Italy. (The gryphon rampant.)

RE msg 45, Darrener2: (...) In which case, I could still be right about Niccolo Dandolo ;-) ;-) ;-) (...)

=> Highly unlikely/definitely not. Nicolo or Niccolò Dandolo was the Venetian military commander of Nicosia when the Ottoman Turks attacked the city in 1570. There is no reason to believe he ever inhabited the Archbishop's palace or had the right to place his arms in the wall for one reason or another. He is believed to have lived in the area near the Venetian Column in Nicosia.

And note that msg 28, does not say anything about the coat of arms, just describes it! But we all could clearly see what it depicts. Which was NOT the question!!!!!
