Hi all,
Just spent a week in beautiful northern cyprus and fortunate to meet up with a great couple one of which posts on here (10 pints tats) I have been to Northern Cyprus before but never visited Famagusta.Although i have seen pictures of the no mans land before, which where kindly sent by Erkan.I never expected to feel as emotional as i did when i stood on the beach and looked accross at the miles of emptyness.
It was a very moving moment and really took me aback. To think that this particular area has been stagnant for 34 years is very hard for me to comprehend what a travesty it is that this area cannot be flattened to the ground and opened up again. The moment that i stepped on the beach and looked accross will stay with me for the rest of my life,
Regards,
a very sombre Paul.

Paul,
It's when you get behind the wire that it really blows you away. ;)

Was taken there by developers on my first day in TRNC five years ago, still facinates and focuses the mind on the enormity of the divide between the sides.

but who would really want to see it see opened, and then tonnes of concrete poured to make yet more hotels - surely that is what will happen should the borders come tumbling?
think of all that undisturbed wildlife and ecological splendour around there - if they had any sense it would be kept as a haven for nature - yeah right!

Totally in favour of a haven for wildlife, but something would have to be done with the buildings as they wouldnt be safe,

Paul.

Newlad/Dodger,
I wouldn't say too many of the buildings in Maras are any less safe than some of the off-plan stuff people are buying in the TRNC.

We have only managed 1 visit to Famagusta since we bought our apartment, so have only seen parts of the old town. We sat outside a lovely restaurant across from the beautiful old church and had a delicious meal. Can anyone give us directions to the areas you are talking about, or indeed tell us if it is better to go on an organised trip? Thanks.

Denali,
Head for the Palm beach hotel which is on the square.next to it you will see an arrow and sign saying Beach Bar follow the directions and you will find yourself on the beach.Turn to your right and you will see the no mans land that has not changed for 34 years,
Regards,
Paul.

Word of warning. Do not take photographs of the ruined hotels!
They are technically a military area and one could find oneself being quizzed in Famagusta Police Station and having their camera consfiscated.

Hi all
I've been coming to Cyprus since 1984 and last year bought a tiny house in the old city of Famagusta. I was coming these hols but my father collapsed and and is still gravely ill, so don't know when I can come next. I hope September. Anyway it's such a fab, wonderful island - I can't wait to actually make a real life there again as I did when I taught in Nicosia for a year. Yes Varosha is sad. It's beautiful to swim there though. Nice to meet you all!

Send me an email and I will answer any questions you have. It is not a timeshare resort.

Try this link for LBC - http://www.longbeachclub.net/cyprus/
It looks as if it's been spruced up a bit, because it was closed when we were there last year. Terri

When I tried to open a bank account at HSBC Famagusta, I was told that I was only able to open a joint account with my partner who happens to be a Turkish Cypriot, and with proof that we were buying a property there. Has anyone else experienced this?
