If you don't mind me asking how much was it to renew your passport. I have heard it's a lot more expensive than doing it in uk,but it would be nice to hear from someone who has actually done this. Thanks

It is more expensive here, it was 143 Euro in January, it had gone down in price - it was more last summer when my wife renewed.

Our bank manager did the countersignature on the photo and application form for me - I think it has to be someone who has known you for 2 or 3 years, though I have heard that someone at the high commission will do it if you can't get anyone else. You can get the forms from BRS or download them from BHC, they are not the same as the ones you use in UK. You need 2 photos, 1 countersigned, old passport, application form and fee. You don't need to provide birth certificate, etc if it's a renewal.

Maybe a silly question, but - I take it that you do this in the RoC and not in the TRNC, if I am wrong just ignore the rest as it makes no difference.

If you do it in the RoC then you must cross into the RoC from nowhere to get it done. Not having a passport at all when you try to get back into nowhere, how do you do it?

Re No.9: The BHC is on the SOUTH side, but they have a sub-office on our side in Shakespear Ave in Nicosia.

In other words the BHC is b i-georgraphical and bi lingual, but the currency is the same - Euros, indicating a leaning towards the south! But the rule is the rule. The only time you cannot access BHC from the north is if you are going to a function in the grounds, and then it is a cross over and going in the'proper' side, but it is great for passports, or for students applying for visas etc - the gateway in the north is very convenient. BUT lreave your mobile phone in the car! They don't like them !

Re No. 11: What's this "proper side"??????? There are 2 sides, are you saying this side is "improper"? I hope not!

I always find it strange that for a country that is only recognised by Turkey that Britain has a high commision in the TRNC. Is that recognition or what?

Can I just ask a Q regarding the signing of the photos? How do the high commission know who you are and if you are really qualified to sign them? Thanks (mines due in June)........

Re No.13:

Britain does NOT have a High Commission in the TRNC, only in the Republic of Cyprus, from which they operate a sub-office in the TRNC; not the same thing at all matey.

P.S. I agree they SHOULD have one. Only a matter of time.

In answer to your question.

The Uk passport office states that the countersignatory should live in the UK and also have known you for a period of 2 years and that the person should be a proffesional person/or a person of good standing in the community.

If you are living abroad Embassy/High commision staff come under this catogory and are authorised to be a countersignatory regardless if thay have known you for the period stated.

Having worked for the MET police, we worked closlely with officers from the passport office on a daily basis and also answered queries from the public in regards to passports.

I personally would ask someone from the high commision to be a countersignatory as the passport office have become very strict due to terrorism and do make checks on the person signing and if there is a problem it could delay the issue of your passport.

I used my Doctor 2 yrs ago to sign the application form & the photos. My husband used the TRNC Bank Manager in the past & neither of us had any problems.

The guy in the passport office will process your application. As he can see who presents the application, there is no need to have the photos countersigned.

This is not just my opinion, it is a fact. It happened to me.
