[Rules and first and only prize as usual]

There are plenty of marble and granite pillars in Northern Cyprus. But the one on the picture below is very special.

Check this photo: http://www.allcrusades.com/BB_pics/DSC01588_cut_72.jpg

The questions (for THREE points!): 1: Is the pillar on the picture made of Greek or Cyprus marble? 2: Where do you find this pillar? 3: Why is the pillar standing on its location?

Answers before Sunday, March 7, 8 pm.

The score in this new series of Quizzes: Darrener2: 1,5 pt. Japeal: 1 pt. Mamachina: 1 pt. Ianwfs: 0.5 pt. Hatty: 1/4 pt, Bill: 1/4 pt.

Hans from what I understand is that the majority if not all of the marble columns that exist in Cyprus (North and South) were manufactured to order by the Italians and shipped over to Cyprus. If I am wrong then I was told little white lies by a group of Archaeologists that I had the privilege of spending a day with in Kato Paphos many years ago. It opened my eyes to the abundance of ancient history that exist's on this Island.

By the way I am not in this competition but if I am correct then you can award any points to Bill because he really needs them.

This marble column once supported the roof vaults for the Chapter House, it's Roman and was re-erected in 1912

RE msg 14, Hatty: (...) This marble column once supported the roof vaults for the Chapter House, it's Roman and was re-erected in 1912 (...)

=> Right! But..., I can give you only one point. The reason for the re-erection is still in the dark in this thread!

The score in this new series of Quizzes: Darrener2: 1,5 pt. Bill: 1,25 pt. Hatty: 1,25 pt. Japeal: 1 pt. Mamachina: 1 pt. Ianwfs: 0,5 pt.

P.S. Bill's answer in msg 15: sorry, too late! Probably you have slow Internet and live far away in the UK..?

I do not know of a reason for it's re-erection other than as part of the restoration works carried out in 1912 by George Jeffrey, who had amongst other titles, the Curator of the Ancient Monuments of Cyprus.

He also wrote many fascinating papers and books on the architecture of Cyprus.

RE msg 18, Darrener2: Well done! Thanks to the efforts of the British architect George Jeffery we can still see the world famous Refectory (a world wonder in medieval times!) in Bellapais Abbey. "In 1912 and 1913, extensive repairs and clearing away of debris and earth from the cloister court, etc., took place under the supervision of the Curator of Ancient Monuments (George Jeffery). The great refectory was supported at its west end where, owing to the removal of the monastic buildings on this side, a serious settlement had taken place threatening the general ruin of the great hall. etc"

The score in this new series of Quizzes: Darrener2: 2,5 pt. Bill: 1,25 pt. Hatty: 1,25 pt. Japeal: 1 pt. Mamachina: 1 pt. Ianwfs: 0,5 pt.

[CONTINUED from mag 20]

RE msg 2, AJ: Although Cyprus has marble (quarried in the area of Bellapais and elsewhere), it's too fractured to use for pillars/columns etc. Many white/grey marble pillars we still see today as part of churches, palaces, houses of nobles etc, were "borrowed" from Salamis (Roman periods), mainly during the Lusignan era (roughly 1192-1489) and Venetian rule (1489-1570/71).

Error: "Do you want more historical quizzes or it enough?" should be: "Do you want more historical quizzes or is it enough?"
