Good question. I'm all for openness when it comes to collecting money for charity.

Here's a great idea why not come along & do a stall then as a stall holder of Pembergul Boot Fair/Market you will have the right to see receipts for donations made for the weeks that you contribute. That way you yourself will also be helping a local charity. Cheshire Homes do attend the market with a stall which is of course (FREE OF CHARGE) & we all join in to help run it when needed. I am sure they would be grateful of any extra support.

MarieB, Just out of interest, does the other market make a charitable donation or pure profit?

Wow, wot a lot of questions! So pardon my brevity (you don't get a lot of space here do you!) 1. I think ALL organisations here should be transparent, so I think it should be publicly known on this board. It is not just me that is interested in how much for charity. Curiosity killed the cat, remember, and this Pussy is almost dead! 2. A stall - wot me! No thanks. I give to charity when , where and how - too lazy to get out of bed and run a stall. 3. Karakum market is free to charities, and is only 5tl for others. 4. New one to open in Karsiyaka will be free to all. 5. Lambousa is now 15tl a stall and 20 tl for food stalls - nothing to charity, but charities can go for free. 6. Reason I queried is becaused I heard a different story about money being given to Cheshire Home out of the money that other stall holders pay. I just LERV to know the truth. Good luck to all those who go out in all weathers to make a few bob, whether for themselves or others, but I do think that eve

MarieB, It's gratifying the extreme interest you're taking in the markets at the moment and if I might elaborate: Pitches at Lambousa are standardised at 15TL. Many stallholders have more than one. There is currently no additional charge for food stalls. Lambousa provides good-sized standardised trestles and chairs to stallholders. We are also in the process of extending shading beyond the garden-bar area. Lambousa also provides 3 acres of car-parking - minimizing the effect of the market on neighbours. The Police are quick to fine and remove cars obstructing roads as other markets have found to their detriment.

(cont...) It is a tad unfair for you to idly declare that Lambousa gives nothing to charity. Firstly, we give registered charities free stalls. To date we provide free space on a regular basis to registered charities including KAR, NCCCT, Tulips, Lapta Old Peoples' Home, SPOT, SOS and Children in Need. Space we could otherwise have sold amounts to not less than 4,000TL per annum. Like other venues The Chateau Lambousa also allows for registered charities to conduct raffles and fund-raising during the many events we organize. As a company Celebrity Hotels' Group also gives quite a fair amount in cash and kind directly to charities we have very long-standing relations with. What we do insist upon is that the charities must be properly registered and authorised. This is to ensure that they are properly audited and have transparent accounts because unfortunately there have been some very sad instances of "charitable" proceeds going astray.

(cont...) Indeed this is why the Government takes such a hard line on non-registered or unauthorised persons raising monies for charity. If such persons are caught then both they and the venue in which they are operating are liable to prosecution and fines; the former for illegally working, the latter for illegal "employment" and usually incorrect invoicing. Of course this seems very hard but because of the fraudulent activities of some in the past charity is now subject to quite stringent controls.

Oh dear I just typed a long reply and it got lost as my internet connection gpot lost. Fundamentally, I was saying it is great to have a full explanation of Chateau Lambousa Market, Gordon, and I am sure everyone will find it a great help to know what is O.K and what is not. (I did say you allowed charity stalls to trade for free - and I hope you didn't think I was saying you are 'uncharitable', merely that the actual market money does not go to Charity - unless the claim of others. What you do personally is up to you, just as the rest of us believ e that it should be a case of 'do not let the left hand know what the right hand is doing' - I am sure your Mother will appreciate that saying. YOur last sentence was one that is close to the hearts of many of us, and I applaud the government that it is taking measure to ensure that fraud does not exist with charity monies. My interest is purely to ask questions others have posed to me - no more and no less. Just as you say charities mus

..... must be transparent and that is why people are asking how much goes to Cheshire Homes out of the stall holders fees. Probably their thinking is pretty much in line with your comments above. Incidentally, I thought I got all the fees correct from asking around, and if I have misquoted yours in any way, I apologise, but I was given the figures from what I believe are reliable sources. As I have often said, I really applaud these folk who run market stalls, wherever they may be in the world. My personal favourite is Portobello Market in Notting Hill Gate, but wherever it may be I am far too lazy to do it. Hence I applaud them, particularly those who do it for love of others. Please, if there is any other info I have got incorrect, please Gordon, put it on Cyprus 44, because I think it is important that people know what is happening and what may or may not be done. Thanks.

Oh boy Jimmy, sounds like Lambousa loss is Karakum's gain. Even the markets seem to reflect life's 'swings and roundabouts'. And by the way, unless Little Me can contradict me, I heard that the advertised donation to Cheshire Homes hasn't happened yet, so perhaps it should not be put down as fact. Also to be fair, I understand Karakum is putting up its costs (but still free to charity stalls) to 10tl - they do have to pay rent to Star Bowling - as Jimmy says 'business is business' So at the end of the day, people choose where they like. Personaly I like Karakum because it is small and friendly, and I expect Karsiyaka will be the same (probably start after Easter -18th???) but for some Lambousa is part of their week-end 'ritual' Whatever, I think it is great that these are happening now. One British custom that has been good to be taken on board.
