With this being a limited offer, thought I'd start a new topic.

O2 Broadband Dongles at HALF PRICE (£10) until Thursday 11 March 2010.

Look here: http://shop.o2.co.uk/promo/o2mobilebroadband/tab/Pay_and_Go

I use O2 mobiles and find them to be unlocked. Are the O2 Dongles unlocked too?

Wouldn't it cost a fortune to use if we buy it in the UK and use in TRNC?

Sorry not very good at this

andrew4232,

I was aware that O2 are not a provider in the TRNC.

Hoped you'd realise that you can put a Telsim or Turkcell sim card in it as the O2 dongle is unlocked.

When you get it, pop in your Telsim/ Turkcell 3G sim card instead.

Other members who have these sim cards will tell you what to do next if you ask them.

One thing to note is that they only have a connection speed of up to 3.6Mbps, I think you can upgrade most dongles to 7.2Mbps by installing the latest software from the manufacturer.

Just searched the O2 forum and there is a suggestion that the O2 connection manager is replaced with the less buggy Huawei E160 software.

See here:

http://www.dc-unlocker.com/downloads/Huawei/Huawei_E160

Haven't tried it yet, but will let you know.

The saints,

May need to update your software - there was a recognised glitch -

See here: http://www.o2.co.uk/connectionmanager

or replace with the Huawei as mentioned in message 11.

If required, to unlock a dongle so it is usable with any sim throughout the world, costs £10,

Therefore, in my book, £20 gets you an Unlocked Dongle from o2 ( also available on ebay for £25)

not a bad price?

If anyone wants one, I am out in 20 days time and will add £5

Hatty, Can you actually achieve more than 3.2 Mbs in TRNC? The figures given are maximums, and following a USB dongle test in the UK (London), PC Pro called the high speeds a fantasy.

For emailing and general internet usage 3 Mbs is more than enough.

If you are wanting to watch video then the big problem is bandwidth not speed.

Could you let us know what broadband you use and how successful it is?

Update: Just received my O2 USB dongle (excellent service by the way from O2. Next day free delivery and mobile message delivery updates)

Popped in my 3 sim card and am now connected to internet and sending this message.

This does suggest that the USB dongle is sim unlocked.

Would be good to hear if anyone has been successful in using an O2 dongle in TRNC.

Last half price day is Thursday for anyone interested.

Hatty,

Did a speed test here: http://www.broadbandwatchdog.co.uk/speed-test.php

Download: 2.1 Mbps Upload: 0.3 Mbps

Of course the location of the dongle is important so may be able to better these times, but not by much.

Hi

Sorry I am really ignorant, can you explain

The dongle will cost £10 a month?

How much for the sim card?

Is it the same sim card as for a phone?

How much will the sim cost a month?

How much in total will it cost per month for 7/24 internet access?

Hi gilken.

These 'dongles' are USB sticks which take a broadband (3G) sim card (looks like an ordinary mobile phone sim)

I've now received the O2 USB which cost me £10 - that's it, no monthly fee. However, this is a bit like buying a mobile phone without a contract. You now have to pay for your sim connection. Now the beauty of this O2 USB is that you are not limited to using O2 - in other words you can shop around for the best broadband deal. In the TRNC you are limited to Telsim or Turkcell (although you can use a UK sim, but would be very expensive)

I'm not in TRNC so I use a 3 sim card and pay £10 for a month of internet connection. Not sure what it is in TRNC but I'm sure that the information is on this message board.

Hope this helps.

Just called O2, very nice man explained that I would require a "data" sim card, do not confuse this with a "voice" sim card.

He told me the data is stored in a packet of maltesers,..............couldn't get past this thought lol

Anyway the "data" sim card goes into the packet of maltesers and finds the maltesers with the information I want, then sends it back to me.

He said this is how he was told.

You get a data sim card with the O2 dongle. Just have to top it up (or use another data card)

Doonhammer,

If it's unlocked you can put another data sim card into your Turkcell dongle. You will need others to tell you if they are unlocked as I'm in UK.

Think it's been mentioned above, but to repeat, you need a Telsim or Tukcell data sim card.

The offices for both are on the Lapta road (leave Girne ( pass Colony hotel) for Lefkosa and turn right at roundabout. Tukcell office on the left and Telsim further down on the right.

Hi woody...I hope this is right cause I am just about to do the same......go to one of the shops ( situated as stated above )....take in your laptop and ask them to set it up with the new sim card you get from them..if you do not have a laptop...ask them to set it up anyway, after choosing amount of download that is suitable for you.

I think the O2 dongle is unlocked and will work with either Telsim or Turkcell sim cards.

I do not think a Turkcell dongle is unlocked as they are part of Vodafone and there's are locked but you can get them unlocked on line for about 10 euros.

Try this for the Telsim costs

Hi Woody,

I agree, it would be helpful if someone in N Cyprus who is using an O2 dongle could let us know.

The issue is whether the O2 dongle is unlocked and my message 22 suggest that it is. However confirmation from a TRNC user would be good.

Just looked on eBay and you can get the O2 USB at a 'Buy it now' for £24.95 or there is an auction for one ending in just under an hour. Currently £15 + £2.50 postage.

I would say at £10 delivered it's a bargain, and worth the risk (not that I think there is one)

I have an unlocked Huawei E220 dongle (ex 3 mobile), it works with both Telsim and Turkcell data sim cards in the TRNC (I have had both), I see no reason why any other unlocked dongle would not work.

My preference is for Telsim because I think it is cheaper.

I cannot get 3G (blue light) in Bahceli (only 2g - green light) as yet, as the mast is not close enough, I can get 3G on the main road around Esentepe so the mast must be there somewhere and I am led to believe you can get 3G in Tatlisu - another mast. I am out next week so I will have a drive around and try and confirm. 2G is ok at my house for internet browsing and e-mails but it is a bit slow, I can use the text facility on skype with 2G but not the phone or video, I can use the video and phone when I am in a 3G area.

Both Tesim and Turkcell tell me they are planning additional masts so the coverage should get better, but this is the TRNC so I will not hold my breath

Hope this helps

Dear Greenman, no problem....I unlocked the o2 ( not sure wether it needed to be unlocked ) but went through the process as above ( took two mins )....then tried it with a t mobile sim..it worked no problem....so it is currently accepting any sim...will let u know which network is best next thurs ( via the dongle! )

Damned good offer £10 for an unlocked Dongle...think I may offer them on ebay for £20! ( would be the cheapest available )...some ebay sites are requesting £10 just for unlocking! ie no dongle

Can you update on how you have found it?

Which area you are in?

Which data sim are you using?

Many thanks

Hi Greenman

Am now back..the dongle worked great..in esentepe...but..

1. bought from Turkcell

2. needed to take my laptop to them to set it up..one guy was an expert..did it in minutes..not straightforward

3. VERY expensive for the week...could only buy 4gb / month worth as a minimum...16ytl for the sim...60ytl ( minimum for the month...good value if you are using for a full month, so cost was 76ytl for a week!

4. Friday evening was VERY busy...soooo slow it stopped...could not use it for a coupple of hours.

all other times was great...skype worked perfectly as did recieving / sending emails...watching tv online was not bad either

5. easy to log on once set up

Thank you Stewart.

i'll copy your reply to the other USB Dongle post if you don't mind to try and generate a few more replies.

Hopefully your good assessment will inspire others to share their experiences of mobile internet in the TRNC.
