Good news for meat lovers! I saw them, three big Dutch bulls, yesterday in Alsancak - on their way to the butcher. They were bound to arrive there in the afternoon, so you may meet them tomorrow at Lemar, Tempo or elsewhere...

I asked the driver of the lorry, Daisy, when I saw the yellow earmarks.

All the cattle in NC have yellow eartags, they were more than likely home reared as to import LIVE cattle they would have neaded a bar code on the tags. Those bullocks certainly had not travelled far. Only three live animals would have costed an arm and a leg to bring in... Dutch breeding, but no way Dutch imported.....

If they are selling the meat in Lemar tomorrow they will tough as old boots! They need to hang for at least 21 days.

DC,

Don't you mean Bullocks?

ie. Castrated male cattle.

Bull meat is mostly inedible due to the testosterone levels.

Oh boy! What have I started..? The farmers and other experts on this board want to have a field day, I'm afraid. Well, I'll tell you all what happened. Alsancak. I was having a Nescafé. Lorry stops in front of me. Three animals in the back. As a Dutchman (you know, clogs, tulips, dikes et all) I recognised cows - until I took a closer look and had to admit these cows looked different below. Checked Google pictures on my mobile phone and the answer was: bulls. Asked the bulls in English where they were from. The bulls replied that they heard I was not English (my Dutch accent, probably) and so we talked for some time in Dutch. Then I checked with the lorry driver (see msg 5) whether the bulls were not lying and he confirmed: Dutch bulls. What more could I have done, board friends, to find out the truth?

P.S. And I was only trying to post a local item... Another lesson: don't do that, DC, what the h*ll do you know about cows/bulls...

Bulls are edible and a lot of the beef you get in supermarkets is barley beef, these are left intire for growth rates! Bulls can be slaughtered at a certain weight, usually kept in doors because of the safety issue.

Bullocks (casterated) can be reared indoors or out and can be a lot older for weight gain.. plus you can keep heifers (young girl cows) with them. No babies...... Bulls can mate as young as 10mths......
