Hope this helps,

The festival of the flood

Cypriots will be celebrating the day of the Holy Ghost in watery style this June as the annual festival of the flood, otherwise known as Kataklysmos, rolls around.

From June 10th - 12th the people of Cyprus will head to the coast to mark the Christian feast of the Pentecost with religious ceremonies, boat races, swimming competitions and water-throwing activities to symbolise the purification of the body and the soul.

Kataklysmos' traditions have both biblical roots with references to the great flood and links to Greek mythology, with seaside celebrations dating back to the worship of the goddess Aphrodite, who was believed to have been born from the sea at Petra tou Romiou in Cyprus.

The festivities, which can last for up to a week in some parts of the island, also include traditional fairs with food and drink, folk music and dancing, and traditional improvised verse competitions, known as tsiattista.
