After speaking with my turkish cypriot friends tonigh, amd they hold very senior positions, one is a barrister who works for both sides, well they are in no doubt that mr tallet will be re elected. They see this now as the future and predict great things to come. Please be to God

But remember any solution must ensure Turkeys Gurantor rights to island and Greek Cypriots are rejecting this. They also want the Turkish settlers to leave. I don t see any agreement for the forceable future. As far as the Greek Cypriots concerned Turkish Cypriots only represented 18% of the total cypriot population. Mr Talat is giving force hopes. Even the Greek Cypriot leader said that Mr Talat just makes things up. There has been very little on agreements and a lot on disagreements. Difficult

LC Mr Talat, is not planning to force and settlement on the TCs.. it will be for them and the GCs to vote in a referendum. The GCs can want what they like.. I don't think anybody is going anywhere.... In the same way that GCs want mainland Turks out, do they plan to send all ex-pats in the south away? A right to reside in Cyprus must exists for all TCs even if they were born in London. or Sydney.

I hope Talat wins. He is genuinely trying to get a just solution but it takes two to dance. It is unlikely that the GCs will agree to anything reasonable but the good thing about Talat is that he is exposing the GCs as the side who does not want a solution. Hence the favourable result of the recent ECHR ruling. More to come. ismer

I agree with Izzy, Talat is showing the GC side up as the ones dragging their feet. Now the ECHR decision has been made imo its a win win for TRNC as Talat now has more to pressure Christofias with and the pressure is on the GC side, they can either agree and reunify or reject and partition, either way unltimately the TC's will have recognition, its just a matter of time

Hi...am not sure about Talat winning, it may be close, hopefully he will win...but if he does not..that will not stop him from Possibly becoming the first president of the newly formed Island I think ( for what its worth )....the Island will become two states ( as in the USA ), one country but two differently run states.....any referendum will go against reconcilation further than this....and...this seems what the PEOPLE of the island wants anyway?

Hi Stewart, "and this seems what the people of the island wants anyway" do you have any stats to prove this, Grey.

Dear Greylag....no stats but I do read newspaper reports form BOTH sides every day...plus comments..again from the people of both sides, and have friends....on both sides....hence it is only my opinion....hence you seem to have missed the question mark from my comment which changes my comment from a statement to a query........besides stats can read anyway you want them to read.

Fair point Stewart.Just wondered if you had something concrete.Just seems to me that the people of the North wanted it last time but would be alot more conservative with a yes vote this time, after the debacle that was caused by the South when they changed their minds.I cannot see the South voting yes as they would see it as having to make concessions which is something they will not do.Just my thoughts, Grey.

I think it would be good if Talat didn't have to stand for re-election for another year - if things don't happen in the next 12 months, then he will have failed Mind you, people have been saying similar for the last 36 years

Mark, The timing of the election is certainly a hindrence to Talat. As it means he cannot devote as much time to the "Cyprus Talks", Grey.

Hi greylag....I think that maybe..folks in the north may vote against it this time ( in the south they will )..knowing full well that there will be a "Plan B" in place ie seperation?

Dont have a clue what Mr C and Mr T have been able to do all year. While am not saying someone else could have done better, what would have been the difference this year as opposed to last year if Mr T wasnt President. Certainly after the Orams lost ,it appeared to be a case of "silence is golden".To say his protestations were minimal and mild would be an understatement and showed a lack of strength.Certainly dont see how one could credit the latest developments to Mr T. If the election is for who has done the most to bring both sides nearer to an agreement and who has done more to protect the interests of the TRNC,then I think if it were possible, the votes should go collectively to the people who made the latest ECHR decision.

Girne 29 I am not sure any of us are in a position to know what Talat has been doing. Just because he is not engaging in megaphone politics, doesn't show a 'lack of strength'. Who knows why the ECHR decision came out early but I bet there was more going on behinds the scenes than any of us know about.

caulkhead. I am not suggesting megaphone politics, but show me a politician who hides his light under the bushel. If anything happens that puts them in a good light they are not normally as shy as you are suggesting Talat is. The lack of strength was evident in the non reaction to events after the Orams case, when the GC's were rubbing TRNC's noses in it and dancing in the streets. If we were talking France or Germany here then I would believe in influence behind the scenes, but I cant see Cyprus having any such influence. I think the ECHR decision came about because, as the Cyprus Mail put it,the EU has just about had its fill of the Cyprus problem clogging up its courts, and not because of anything behind the scenes .Quite frankly the EU has probably tired of Cyprus anywhere be it in front of, above ,below and behind, the scenes, and might have resented being used as a threatening tool by the ROC to avoid serious negotiations.

Talat has the charisma of a dead ant, suffers from xenophobia and would wish nothing more than the TRNC (which he abhors) to be aligned with Moscow. He's a damn 'red'! Richard
